Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Bottle, Amazing beer. Plum, cherry and red wine aroma. Virtually no head with a dark brown murky body. Moderately sweet flavor that is perfectly balanced. Medium body with a oily texture. No alcohol taste present. This is truly an outstanding beer worth the money, a treat.

Pours with lots of tan head. Rich sugary aroma and deep brown body, with little lacing. Palate is very rich and thick with over enthusiastic carbonation, but easily quelled. Flavor is extremely sweet, but pleasant. Lots of cherry, plum, prune, burnt sugar, dark rum. Overall, quite delicious, if overpowering.

2006 bottle from Belmont Station. Very nice. First thought was it smells fruity in a way similar to Trois Pistoles but it tastes a lot roastier and chocolatier, more so than Rochefort 10. Very sweet, with lingering roasty and fruity aftertaste.

Lovely beer. Dark brown and opaque in appearance. Mine poured with virutally no head. Complex aroma beyond my abilities of discernment. Flavor is huge and wonderfully complex--fruits and spices playing well off the malts, finishing with hints of chocolate and coffee. Touch of woody smokiness in there too.

11.2oz bottle sampled alongside its cousin, Pannepøt. 2006 vintage. Smelled of chocolate liqueur and dark fruits with a hint of sassafras. Almost perfume-ish. The alcohol burned my nostrils ever so slightly. Poured a dark brown color with a dense tan head that retained its height well. Only a bit of lace was left behind on the glass at the end. Nearly opaque with reddish-orange highlights. Medium to full bodied and slightly sweet. Ample carbonation, but less than I had expected. The alcohol was evident and had a warming effect. I tasted chocolate liqueur, fig, raisin, roasty malt, and molasses. The hint of sassafras came out again in the flavor. A bit of banana was there as well, especially with each burp. Interesting beer.

2006 bottle. Hazy brown, nice head. Dark fruit and toffee aroma, flavour of plums and licorice. Impressive body, not being overly sweet. Great balance, excellent finish with a nice alcohol warmth. After the rather disappointing Struise Mikkeller, I didn’t expect much, but this is astonishingly good, up there with the best of them!

Pours dark brown with a nice tan head. There is something in the aroma I can’t place, but it takes me back to a time where that smell is the same. Must be one of the spices in there. A bit fizzy. Classic belgian yeast smell and taste. A bit brighter and less sweet which I like then its 2007 cousin.
