This is a very sweet beer. One reason I don’t really like it. Don’t get me wrong, its a beautiful beer. It smells great and honestly isn’t bad. But its too much of a sugarbomb for me. There is a deep flat malt flavor in this, strong in molasses flavor. Some folks love that, I do not. Dried prunes, dried apricots, dried raisins and dried dates - that’s the makeup of this beer.

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 4, 2009 Bottle. 11.2 oz. Pours deep, deep brown, nearly opaque, with a finger, beige head. Aroma of raisins, apples, wine, scotch, vinegar, malts, yeast, and caramel. Medium body with a beautiful, warm blossom in the finish. This brew is perfectly balanced; sour and sweet are balanced; heavy and smooth alike. Outstanding Belgian strong, and, thus far, one of my favorite brews that I have sampled. Highly recommended. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 3, 2009 From bottle at Cambrinus. Mellow rich sweet aroma. Malty with roasted grain, overripe plum and bitter hops. A bit of fruity esters but not a lot going on in the nose. Dark brown black clear with thin tan head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet and malty with plum and macerated fruit tang. Alcohol warming with medium bitter finish. Roasted grain or barley. A bit thin at the finish. jmm635 (262), Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 3, 2009 Deep brown pour, tons of sediment. Starts with a fizzy head but quickly fades and leaves no lacing. Aroma was incredibly complex. Quite boozy with tons of sweetness, mainly molasses. Some hints of coffee and a spicy yeastness. Flavor had a bit more caramel sweetness and an unexpected tartness to it. Reminds me a little of brandy. Right out of the fridge the palate was fizzy and lively, however, it becomes extremely soft and mellow as it warms. Mostly my fault for not being able to wait for a proper temperature. Very dark brown with a minimal pale beige head that settles instantly and leaves basically no lacings.
Sweet malts and lots of fruit aromas (mostly plums and currants) in the nose. Prominent but mild spiciness. Woody notes, a hint of chocolate and some alcohol. A pleasant and balanced smell, but it’s somewhat restrained - it’s almost like its character is too round.
The taste is basically just more of the same. Lost of sweet malts and rich flavors of fruits (plums, cherries, currants). Dark bread. Hints of chocolate, a general woody flavor and pleasant spices (reminiscent of Christmas spices). Some earthy yeast (that really gets bigger when the yeast sediments are poured into the glass, the yeast in this one really packs a lot of flavors). For some reason, in all the versions if Pannepot I’ve had, I think I pick up a taste that reminds me of Coca Cola, don’t know how to describe it in any other way though. A light, not very tangy, tart note and some grassy hops in the middle. The finish is gently bitter with a decent amount of sweet alcohol and some wood, raisins, cherries and spices.
Rather full-bodied, very smooth texture. Mild carbonation.
A good beer. Tasty and balanced with a very round character. I really like how well the sweet malts and fruit esters go with the spices in this one. But overall, the flavors are a little too round and it almost feels like the beer holds back a little. I wonder how if would come out if everything was turned up a notch of two.
