Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Pours dark reddish brown with a nice creamy, tan head, but rather short lasting. Good lacing. Malty nose with spices and dark fruit. Flavour with malt, raisins and plums. Full bodied. Ends up more dry. A very enjoyable brew.

I think that this version of pannepot is the best of all. Very smooth at all and absolutely one of my favourites. Just a half step over the others.

Bottle, 33cl. Pours very alluring dense and dark mahogany, with generous off-white head. Extremely complex aroma of sweet dark fruits, chocolate, liquorice, spices and caramel. Quite sour on the palate, slighty too much so for me (compared to the Reservas), but a cracking ale nonetheless.

Bottle. 11.2 oz. Pours deep, deep brown, nearly opaque, with a finger, beige head. Aroma of raisins, apples, wine, scotch, vinegar, malts, yeast, and caramel. Medium body with a beautiful, warm blossom in the finish. This brew is perfectly balanced; sour and sweet are balanced; heavy and smooth alike. Outstanding Belgian strong, and, thus far, one of my favorite brews that I have sampled. Highly recommended.

From bottle at Cambrinus. Mellow rich sweet aroma. Malty with roasted grain, overripe plum and bitter hops. A bit of fruity esters but not a lot going on in the nose. Dark brown black clear with thin tan head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet and malty with plum and macerated fruit tang. Alcohol warming with medium bitter finish. Roasted grain or barley. A bit thin at the finish.

Deep brown pour, tons of sediment. Starts with a fizzy head but quickly fades and leaves no lacing. Aroma was incredibly complex. Quite boozy with tons of sweetness, mainly molasses. Some hints of coffee and a spicy yeastness. Flavor had a bit more caramel sweetness and an unexpected tartness to it. Reminds me a little of brandy. Right out of the fridge the palate was fizzy and lively, however, it becomes extremely soft and mellow as it warms. Mostly my fault for not being able to wait for a proper temperature.

Opaque with a boozy and soapy aroma. in the mouth it is the most undeniable beautiful thing. Thick mollases are met with smooth vanilla and wooded brightness. Vinous and porty. Walnuts and prunes. We’re there.
