muzzlehatch (4429), Burlington, USA Jun 30, 2005 330 ml bottle from 2004 shared with too many at the Ratebeer Mondial gathering. This get-together will mostly be remembered I think for the vast numbers of bodies squeezed into Stephen’s small apartment, the struggle of the A/C to compensate, and Sprocket loving the Vervifontaine but nothing else. The beers, for the most part, were not spectacular or if they were, had been tried by most of the participants. New masterpieces? Just this. Chocolaty-root beer nearly opaque color with a ring of lasting foam...immensely rich chocolate-hazelnut-caramel sweet nose, so decadent that you just want to fill a towel with it and sit in a steam room all day...light spiciness keeps it from cloying...body is full of molasses sweetness and pungency, brown sugar, chocolate soda...later, anise and vanilla help to give complexity, and bready yeast forms a nice foundation...smooth milky body offers tiny hints of port at the finish...marvellous, though I definitely need a larger sample.
Travlr (115), Washington, Washington DC, USA Nov 29, 2008 Dark brown with medium white head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel and nuts. Malty and well-balanced, with hops and spice. Good complexity. A winner! pj1855 (103), Eagan, Minnesota, USA Nov 29, 2008 This is a great beer. Pours a cloudy brown color with very little head. Very pleasant sweet aroma. Nicely balanced flavors of dark fruit, caramel, chocolate and spices. Alcohol is hidden very well. Bragesnak (1456), Aarhus, Denmark Nov 28, 2008 From Voldby, DK.

Brown with red shine and nice white head. Aroma of toffee, chocolate and dried fruit. Flavor is balanced with notes of raisins, mokka, berries and yeast. Creamy palate Miksu (1348), Jyväskylä, Finland Nov 21, 2008 0.33 l bottle, vintage 2006. Dark reddish brown color with big creamy head. Sweetish, warming, chocolatey and raisiny aroma with black currant, anis and a hint of solvent. Sweet and warming flavor with plenty of dark fruits and chocolate. Licorice and coffee in the finish. Soft palate. Very tasty, nice smooth dark malt and fruit character. I would like to have more belgian fermentation flavors though. elihapa (407), Hawaii, USA Nov 20, 2008 2006 bottle, from Forest City in CT. Pours brown with a large, creamy, tan head. Aroma of fresh dates, chocolate, rum cake, and red cherries. Palate is pleasantly prickly, with full-bodied mouthfeel. Flavor of rich, chocolaty fruit and malt which is absolutely delicious. I also detect some well-blended spicy, woody notes that just add to the beauty of this beer. Pannepot is one of those rare brews that every beer taster aspires to have one day, then upon trying, finds it to be even better than anticipated. What else . . . oh, the finish is mildy sweet, with a hint of warming alcohol (which was otherwise undetectable throughout). As noted, this was a 2006 bottle, so perhaps the age contributed to Pannepot’s beauty, but I’ve just never had a beer so complex, smooth, and tasty at the same time. Just name a price for this and I’m there . . .
