Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

33 cl. Dark brown beer with a huge rocky light brown head. Long lasting and continues to grow long after the beer has been poured. Very creamy tight lace. An absolutely gorgeous brew. The aroma is very heavy with loads of spicy coriander, bittersweet chocolate, red grapes, dark plums, prunes and some other sweet fruity notes that I can’t quite put my finger on. Sweet berries, blackberries, and raspberries all hiding behind a soft gingery flavour. The palate is completely silken with a creamy, wheaty texture. Flavour is a combination of heavy fudge, dark chocolate, sweet berries, some herbal hops and a touch of mint as well. Lots of yeasty complexity throughout, with strong spice and a figgy/rummy sweetness throughout. A bit of oaky/vanilla character as well. Despite the sweetness, there is a bit of late tartness that helps accentuate the fruity flavours and keeps the brew from becoming cloying. Warming also intensifies the raspberry/chocolate flavours. An absolutely amazing beer.

Bottle @ home. Aroma is wonderful with lots of dark fruit and spicey notes. Almost black in color. Taste is spicey with lots of caramel and dark fruit. A bit alcohol in the finish.

Bottle SB&WF-08 - Unclear ruby amber colored beer with a dense head. Aroma is spicy, malty and vinous with strong notes of caramel and ripe fruit. Flavor is very malty and sweet with notes of spices and caramel. Full bodied, powerful and well balanced. Highly recommended!

When I opened the bottle it foamed over onto the counter and appeared brown, but when poured it sits in the glass a dark brown, almost so much that it is black. The head is a frothy light tan or off white.I’m getting a hint of bannana, alcohol, oat, and spice, one of the best smelling beers i have had. Taste:hints of banana, sweet syrupy flavor, caramel cinnamon, and alcohol. The sweetness of this beer masks the alcohol nicely. This is an addition to my top ten list.

A nice, deep brown... the head on here leaves a beautiful, creamy looking sheet that seems that it will continue to stick around until drinking begins. It’s a lighter tan. This smells beautiful... toffee scents, a definite spiciness... I can’t make out all of what is coming together there; it’s all rather complex and rich. Cinnamon? Allspice? Clove? A little chocolate, and hints of dark fruit - raisin and date. A delicious medley of malt roast, spices, toffee, dark fruits, some spotty notes of anise, maybe (most notable post-finish). Alcohol makes an appearance, but there’s plenty else going on here to not pay attention to it - that’s to say, it’s not really ’hidden’; it’s just a little part of the bigger picture. Full body, somewhat creamy, somewhat foamy. A very nice feeling brew, with a pleasant warming on the way down. It’s rather candy-like and makes for an incredibly easy drinker. It’s somewhat tempting to drink it quickly, but exercising some patience is very rewarding. An excellent take at the style, and would do very well among some of the abbey brews. Pick it up if you come by it. Excellent stuff.

Bottle, 33cl. Pours a redbrown beer with a big lightbrown head. At first the aroma is strange and very complex. The aroma is roasted malt, sweetness and hops (blackberries). The flavor is molasses or dark syrup with dark malts. Almost no hopflavor. The mouthfeel is bold, and the overall impression is complex.
