The nose offers a great balance of yeast and malt. Phenolic banana and apple balance well with a healthy dose of burnt sugar, sweet chocolate and plum. Big, chewy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Raisins and plums hit the tongue first, with a second wall of malt offering burnt cookie and dark chocolate. Finishes chalky with residual cocoa and fudgey notes. Good stuff. Nose is toffee, dark fruits, molasses and alcohol. Palate is sweet with raisins, brown sugar, vanilla and a touch of salty chocolate in the finish. Lighter mouth feel. Pretty complex brew that hides its alcohol nicely. Thanks Paul! blankboy (3239), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Pours a hazy deep copper-brown with a small diminishing frothy off-white head. Aroma of lightly sour fruit, caramel malt, brown sugar, spices and dusty yeast. Flavour’s pretty much the same: Lightly sour fruit with spices, brown sugar and caramel malt. Thick and syrupy. Alcohol’s totally hidden. Good stuff, I could pound back several of these -- easily. bp (460), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 5, 2008 Bottle (2006 vintage): pours a murky, brownish-red with just a few whisps of head, strong aroma of alcohol and spices, taste is malty with plenty of spices, no sign of the alcohol. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 5, 2008 2006 Vintage: Slightly thick head which dissipates slowly, spicy aroma and mouth feel, cinnamon is apparent. Chocolate is present, candy, maltiness, candi sugar, bit of caramel. Not as complex as the Pannepot Number 4 I think and I prefer the other one. EricE (467), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 4, 2008 Thick dark brown pour with a thin light tan head. Very intense spice aroma - sweet cinnamon and nutmeg. Similar spicy flavor. The spices remind me of many Christmas beers. Its port like and strong, but the alcohol is not overpowering. I think I would have enjoyed this more on a cold winter day. Ethereal (1500), London, Greater London, England

Pours a murky brown with a malty aroma that manages to be both salty and sour. Chocolate malt, oranges, toffee and hops all vie for your attention and the spicy notes keep the candy sweetness in check. Smooth on the tongue, but rather unbalanced and "to & fro" for my liking. undsioux7 (561), Cologne, Minnesota, USA
