Commercial Description:
The Rat is a very chuggable drop. Coming in at just under 6%, it's a fine session beer with a clean dry finish. The generous use of Amarillo hops gives the Rat a crisp bitterness that some say borders an IPA. The combination of High Color Pale and Munich malts give the Rat a light golden color and a flavor that screams "drink me you wanker".

A golden ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a very herbal malt with light floral hops, with fresh grasy notes. In mouth, a crisp malt with a more British hops, clean and crisp. Medium bodied. On tap at brewpub, August 16 2009.

Stumptown is my local, being within walking distance (or staggering distance on the way back). I think this is the best of the brews that they brew themselves. Fresh hop bite, almost like an IPA rather than a pale, no too alcoholic (6%) makes this my choice of session beer at this establishment. When i need a quick hit of delightful hopiness with strength (which I usually do) I go for the Racer 5 which they also have on tap.

Draft. Amber beer with an off-white head. Light hop aroma - mostly floral and citrus. Caramel flavor with some floral and citrus notes, but a bit of dirtiness takes over. Medium body. Caramel and light hops linger with a bit off off-flavor.

On tap @ the brewpub. Clear golden with a one finger white head, fading to a soapy white film before long. Faint aroma, though some nice floral and citrus hops are present with a little bit of caramel behind. Flavor is much the same with a little bit of a buttery element, and fades to a semi-dry finish. Bitterness peaked around a 3. Light carbonation with a light body. Not too exciting. but not too bad, either.

At Hops in Humboldt in Fortuna, CA this came in the glass a hazy yellow with a nice head that faded fast and left light lacing. Nose of caramel malts and grassy hops. Mouthfeel is medium and flavors tend towad the malts. . Dry finish Decent brew and easy to drink.

Draft at Stumptown. Pours a tad hazy for a pale, and retains almost no head, unfortunately. The rat is tasty enough, slightly hop-forward, and different batch-to-batch, but definitely a beer I can have 4 or 5 of outside on Stumptown’s deck.
