Pours a deep reddish-brown. The head is beige and did not last long - leaving a faint rim around the edges.
Nose of rich malt but light for a dunkel.
Crisp, clean nutty malts on the palate. Medium mouthfeel with pronounced carbination on the finish. A light version of this style. Nik925 (305), California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 14, 2008 Strong fruited malt with a nice tinge of burnt. Better than other attempts of this style I have tried and well made. Good carbonation an mouth feel. Overall, nothing crazy good, but great for the style. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 17, 2008 On tap at the brewery. Super dark red color with a creamy beige head. Light toffee, and caramel aroma. The flavor has some brown sugar, caramel, and nuttiness, with light bitterness. Light bodied with hight carbonation. At first, I had a sampler size glass of this and really liked it, but a whole mug on my second visit wasn’t nearly as good. It tasted a little weaker and not quite as fresh. Still decent and quit drinkable, but missing the richness of flavor that would demand a second mug. bhensonb (4392), Woodland, California, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Mar 2, 2008 Draft at the brewpub. Strongish caramel aroma. Hazy dark brown color with a flat beige head. Near medium body with sharpish carbonation. Flavor is darkish caramel with a little noble hop. Could be a hint of chocolate. Fits the style. The finish does develop a small amount of bitter that accumulates. DTM (541), Winters, California, USA

Update: Had it a second time and had more flavor. Upped it 0.2 points. timfoolery (484), California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 21, 2007 On tap at Sudwerk. Similar to the Doppel-bock, this one is a bit more watered down version. Flavors are similar (chocolate and caramel), but are muted or distant. DYCSoccer17 (2201), Davis, California, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Oct 19, 2006 On tap at the brewpub last week. .3L sample. Similar roasted, cereal-like malt bill to that of the Ur-Pils that I just finished. Some spices and metallic hops notes are also present in the nose. Doesn’t really smell like a dunkel. Mildly hazy dark amber body with a smooth, small, off-white head and ok lacing. Toasted, roasted, malts to start. Becomes lightly floral and a bit hoppy with some lingering bitterness later on. Tastes a lot like the Ur-Pils I just had. Kind of funkel for a dunkel.
