Sweet malty nose and flavor, but not over the top. Seemed kinda thin for a marzen. A good beer, but didn’t strike me as a wow-beer. mjg74 (2000), La Mesa, California, USA

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jan 10, 2005 Deep copper hue. Sweet malt base (caramel), but it’s kind of subtle. Very toasty and bready. Healthy amount of bitterness. Dryish finish. Very easy to drink, but it’s also easy to read, so I lost interest fast. That said, it would still make a good session beer. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 2, 2005 (12 oz bottle: Safeway in Petaluma, CA) Right out of the starting gate, the aroma suggests a solid Marzen is about to please me to no end. It smells very malty, like taking a tour of a brewery, but not sweet or perfumy like so many others American entries in this category. And oh man, this tastes pretty damn good too. Very malty, again reminiscent of a brewery, like sampling some wort. It’s moderately sweet, but not sugary, which again seems to characterize so many others in the style. Mild bitterness lends some balance, but still allows the malt the spotlight. Medium to full bodied for the style with a full, round mouthfeel. Beautiful dark amber color, bordering on a light ruddy brown. Off-white head pours about an inch in height, and exhibits pretty solid retention, slowly receding to a thin topping and holding there. A big initial ring of lace is left on the glass, and then large patches decorate the glass under the top ring. This is a pretty damn good beer, worth buying more than just a single bottle, and I think I’ll start sending this out as bonus beers in my trades. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA

Somewhat thin malt taste with a lasting dryness. Not the best Marzen I’ve tried but far from the worst. It had a nice start. Very nice color and aroma. The first sip was disappointing. I expected more. I found it finished rather weak. bb (2930), Martinez, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 25, 2004 Bottle. Dark amber beer with a nice head. Aroma has a nice maltiness to the typical lager-like aroma. Wonderful fruity flavor of figs and plums to go with a nice malt backbone. Just a little hop spiciness to make this a good all-round beer.
