Extremely dark opaque brown (pretty much black) with very foamy tan head that leaves nice lacing lines.
Major roasted malts with an emphasis on chocolate. Smells dry, almost slightly sour.
Very dry roastiness with notes of chocolate and coffee. Ends with a strong English, somewhat metallic and even slightly citrusy, bitterness. A slight sweetness becomes apparent as it warms.
Moderate carbonation and relatively light body for the style. Quite smooth and finishes very dry.
This is one of the best Porters in terms of simple drinkability. In my opinion, this is Summit’s best year round offering.
13mikey (118), New Hope, Minnesota, USA Oct 25, 2009 12 oz bottle at my brother-in-law’s house. Dark brown pour with fluffy light tan head. Chocolate aroma with a hint of coffee. Flavor is a roasted coffee/chocolate mix, finish is slightly bitter chocolate. Narnad (682), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Oct 19, 2009 Pours from the bottle a dark black with a very creamy and dense tan head. Aroma has a very light dark chocolate which helps to soften the very pungent coffee bitterness within the nose. Flavor has a hefty roasted coffee presence, very light chocolate sweetness at the end but the coffee as a whole dominates this perfectly. Body is light with the texture leaning toward the a thin-creamy feeling, high carbonation and great lacing are provided by this brew. Overall the great coffee bitterness is well balance and makes a very enjoyable brew. hero12 (58), USA Oct 18, 2009 Pours a dark brown with a creamy tan head. Malty nose with very little carbonation. Hints of coffee/chocolate and a malt taste dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Oct 13, 2009 What a rich aroma. Smoky, really smoky aroma. Hmm, the flavor almost has a nut brown character to it; fairly malty. Pretty good. pumpmaster (474), Pembroke Pines, Florida, USA Oct 13, 2009 12 ounce bottle purchased at Total Wine Tampa, FL for $1.34 in a 4-style sampler 12-pack. Very good! bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Oct 10, 2009 Bottle from Beer Geek. Pours dark brown/black with a decent light tan head. Aromas of dark roast malt with coffee and chocolate. Rather full bodied with frothy carbonation. Flavor is coffee, dark roast/burnt malt and maybe a little chcoolate. The finish is slightly sweet. But the dark elements balance that. Not sure why this is perceived as thin by so many. Maybe cause it thins as the carbonation leaves? markas101 (541), Fargo, North Dakota, USA Oct 9, 2009 33 cl bottle, Winnipeg, MB, Canada via Fargo. Almost opaque deep black/ruby colour. Roasted malt with an almost sweet berry background. Very nice sweet chocolate flavor with coco on the finish. A bit too sweet for me but nice for something produced on this scale.
