There is some sweetness inthese malts. The finsh lingers, contrary to what the description says, but still a good stout. frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 21, 2006 Pours a dark brown/mahogany with a creamy tan head that leaves a wet lace as it fades. Aroma finds light roasts that don’t impress, but this beer is all about the flavor. Mildly syrupy with musty notes, my first impression is that this tastes like a homebrewed "kit" stout. Further revelations include thick roasts that are dry yet caramel-laden, light smoke and chocolate with savory notes. Mid-bodied with light astringence to finish and alcohol notes that linger. As porters go, this is top-of-the-line.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 9, 2006 It was black in color with a spare head. It had a coffee taste and was very smooth and balanced. Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 28, 2006 A great porter. Surprisingly rich in chocolate and roasted malt. I bet this would score big in blind taste tests. When it’s warm it’s even better. Ughsmash (4058), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 18, 2006 Bottled. Poured a clear, deep walnut brown with hints of garnet... short cap of caramel head and some lacing. Really enjoyed the aroma, too.. deeply roasted, almost burnt dark chocolates and coffee. Flavor had a roasty dark chocolate base surrounded by coffee bitters and some sour dark fruity notes. Rather light-bodied on the palate with the coffee bitterness at the edges. Roasty chocolate finish lasted a while. Very nice porter. Indy (87), Hopkins, Minnesota, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 6, 2006 Bottle. Pours inky black with a quickly dissipating tan head. When held against a bright light, you can catch hints of ruby redness around the edges. Aroma is sweet and malty, with hints of chocolate and coffee. Flavor is laced with chocolate and roasted coffee malts and a little sweetness, balanced with a nice bitter finish. The roasted malts linger. Very smooth, with enough carbonation to keep it nice and refreshing. One of the great "unsung" porters, I think it’s rating belies the fact that this is a fantastic beer. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA
