Commercial Description:
Early German monks created “bock” beer as a hearty beverage that would help sustain them during their Lenten fasts. The first bock beers were dark, but soon came “blonder” styles such as maibock. Maibocks have a rich, malty, full flavor. And, since our first brewhouse was from Heimertingen in Bavaria, we’ve honored that heritage by giving the name to our first lager beer.“Bock,” by the way, is German for “male goat.” It doesn’t make sense to us either.

Pale, small head. Looks like scotch. Both flowery hops and malt in the aroma. Flavor is...interested. Well balanced, a little bit fruity. Has a kind of oily mouthfeel. Its ok, not great. I’m not sure I like big lagers, not sure I like maibocks.

Sourish tart aroma, looks like a ubiquitous pale yellow american lager beer. Pretty nice creamy head. Stronger initial flavor hit that starts off mild then goes into building alky bitter bite. Unique suspicious taste. Sullen and brisk, this beer tastes about as the 7% would indicate. Strong americanized tripel alky flavors. Irresolute and spirited. Finish is quite medicinal, alky and I think it is oppressive at times. Does have a male goat kick. Cannot hold a candle to Nova Paka Valdstein or Victory St. Boisterous Hellerbock.

Sweet smelling, wheat, corn, and sweet malts. Sweet in taste, light. Slight malty aftertaste. Pretty standard mediocre beer.

Gold bottle pour with small white head. Light nose of corn and sweet malt. Flavor is rather sweet up front, with a nice malty medium body. Really doesn’t seem to match other heller’s that I’ve had, yet decent ale.

Great refreshing summer beer. Hides the alcohol really well. Yellow body with thin white head. Moderate carbonation malty body with some minor fruitiness/sweetness. Very enjoyable!

From tap. Pours golden yellow with a white head. Aroma is hay and corn. Flavour is corn, soft malty with a slight sweetness. Bittersweet finish. OK maibock but doesn’t really match the original German ones.

Rated 3/16/07: The wonderful thing about the beers from Summit is that they tend to be great examples of their particular style. This maibock is nicely crafted and exceeded my expectations. Light bready aroma, very malty with some sweet and sour notes. Dark golden pour with a huge, thick white head and considerable lacing. Slow and steady carbonation throughout. Creamy with a thick dose of malt, the mouthfeel is filling and clean. A slight detection on the alcohol is noticeable but doesn’t stand out in the least. Flavor was surprisingly complex. Rich malt backbone with a sprinkling of bittering hops. A hearty nutty flavor pulls through along with a sweet dry honey taste as well. I expected the beer to have a sweeter taste but it sure comes off nice and balanced. Aside from a stronger aroma I don’t find anything else discouraging about this tasty spring time treat.
