Commercial Description:
Surly 16 Grit is an homage back to the old abrasive factory that was the precursor to the Surly brewery location. We used different sized abrasive grains to differentiate the aggressiveness of the sanding discs. Sixteen Grit is pretty abrasive, kind of like a DIPA. Kettle hopped with Warrior, Amarillo and Glacier hops. Twince dry-hopped with Glacier and Amarillo. Balanced with caramel-oat malt flavors and huge orange lemon aroma finishing with a pithy bitterness.

[Draft @ Barley House] Poured a dark golden color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of pine, citrus fruits, floral hops, grass, wood, resin, and alcohol. Taste of citrus fruits, resiny pine, some honey, a bit of tobacco, and a bitter, grapefruit finish, with some dry alcohol as well.

Pours a honey gold with thick white head. Aroma is a mineral wheat hops smell. Flavor is a citrus blend with definite earthy hop notes. A bitter note begins each sip but smoothes out with a very subtle creamy flavor.

On tap @ Map Room. Clear light amber beer, average creamy head leaving lacing; herbal, medicinal aroma; tastes like a hoppier Furious, ending long and bitter. Slightly peaty and spritzy in the mouth, but a little thin. Not a DIPA in the Dradnaught and Maharaja mould, but very drinkable ala Hopsoulution and quite tasty.

Draft at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle. Cloudy, orangey IPA color, sudsy head of bubbles coating the sides of the glass. Smells like an apricot sundae—it’s-just-that-hoppy! Taste is bursting with with syrupy malts and the fruitier side of American hops. Despite the name, I found this to be quite smooth, until I started to feel a bitter burn on my soft palate. Now the more familiar hop character of grapefruit, pine and an otherwise undefinable snap, like, yanking a big strip off a roll of strapping tape.

On tap at the 8th St. Grill in Minneapolis. I’m not sure what was up with the keg or perhaps the lines, but this beer didn’t smell of hops and the taste was just okay. Judging by the responses here I either got a taste of some spoiled 16 Grit or everyone else I rating on Surly’s reputation. At $9.00 a glass this should be looked into.

Guest tap at Piece and HELL YEAH! Amber pour wtih an off white head. Tons of hops, fruit, caramel, and MORE HOPS! Grapefruit galore! Flavor is loaded with grapefruit and some good caramel malt balance. Great mouthfeel and just a great beer!

An excellent DIPA from a great brewery, poured on tap at the tour deep amber with nice white head. Flavor was extremely hoppy and bitter, with a nice crisp and easy to drink finish. Alcohol masked too well with citrus and floral tones, an excellent DIPA.
