Commercial Description:
Surly 16 Grit is an homage back to the old abrasive factory that was the precursor to the Surly brewery location. We used different sized abrasive grains to differentiate the aggressiveness of the sanding discs. Sixteen Grit is pretty abrasive, kind of like a DIPA. Kettle hopped with Warrior, Amarillo and Glacier hops. Twince dry-hopped with Glacier and Amarillo. Balanced with caramel-oat malt flavors and huge orange lemon aroma finishing with a pithy bitterness.

On tap @ Lunar. Pours faintly hazy burnt orange with a nice white head. Very citrusy and floral aroma with tons of hops. Taste is very enjoyable. Nice and bitter, but not too oily and under-balanced.

Draft at Jerry’s. Hazy amber-gold with big, foamy off-white head / Rich, creamy nose of fresh pine, citrus & bread / Medium body, some sweetness with creamy, low carbonation, and with good malt-hop balance (for a 2IPA) and finish / Flavors of bread, oats, fresh cut pine, orange, lemon, and cream / Not as aggressive as some, but beautifully balanced with great flavor profile.

On tap @ Maproom Saturday. Big IIPA! The aroma is intense, strong fresh amarillo hop, you can tell this one is going to have a kick ass bitter hop flavor. The taste is just a suspected, just not too balanced in my opinion. Over done on the bitterness and no much malt backbone. Taste of pine, citrus and fresh hops. A real intense IIPA. Could have let this sit and mellow a bit. But oveall a nice IIPA

Tap @ Maproom. Pours orange with a white head. Awesome hoppy aroma, with heavy grapefruit and a little bit of pine. Great bitter flavor, hops dominate just the way I like it. Grapefruit and other citrus flavors. Oily mouthfeel. Awesome stuff, glad to finally grab a pint.

On tap Firkin Fest 09. Pours a deep orange color, slight sediment, thick foamy head. Flavor is lovely citrusy thick hops and a slightly sugary malt backbone. Notes of citrus fruit, citrus zest, candy sugars, crystal malt. Slightly gritty, I imagine due to the barrel conditioning. Finishes dry and earthy.

pours serious amber with thick white head. nose of heavy hops, grapefruit, floral and pine and a little carmel. taste just as it smells, floral, grapefruit and lots of hops, quite bitter and woody. Really good, too bad Surly won’t make it again.
