Commercial Description:
Surly 16 Grit is an homage back to the old abrasive factory that was the precursor to the Surly brewery location. We used different sized abrasive grains to differentiate the aggressiveness of the sanding discs. Sixteen Grit is pretty abrasive, kind of like a DIPA. Kettle hopped with Warrior, Amarillo and Glacier hops. Twince dry-hopped with Glacier and Amarillo. Balanced with caramel-oat malt flavors and huge orange lemon aroma finishing with a pithy bitterness.

Handbottle shared by beastiefan2k at Indra’s Strong Ale Fest. Pour is cloudy orange ruby, with a smallish off white head. Nice thick lacing left behind on the glass as the head falls. Aroma is honey sweet, with gritty grainy resinous hops. Taste is the gritty resin citrus pine hops, sweet malty honey, and some nice floral expressions to the back. Palate is medium, pretty sticky and lasting finish. Nice one, thanks Eugene.

Thanks for sharing, beastiefan2k. The body was deep orange copper with an off white head. The aroma was woody with some light grapefruit. The taste was light sweet grains and citrus. There was also some bologna and wood. A thick mouth feel. Decent.

Nice DIPA. Hops were still very prominent, even after a few weeks in the growler. Aroma is nice and floral, with hints of copper and orange. Pours a dark amber with a thick head. Flavor is more flowers, with lots of citrus fruit and pine. Lots of orange peel, and touches of grapefruit and maybe even pineapple. Malt keep everything in balance. Notes of oats and tobacco in the background. Finishes like iced tea. Very nice, thanks to tjthresh for sharing.

Growler shared by JCB. Thanks Jason. Nose is all sorts of fruity hops--tropical, citrus, mango, skunky stick icky--just like i like it. Flavor is nicely bitter with more fruitiness and some nice skunk. Hope they make this again and put it in a can, although like ogglethorp says, I’d love to try it fresh from the tap.

Growler. Pours hazy amber color with a decent sized off white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, light caramel, orange. Flavor is again grapefruit, pine, mango, pear, orange. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished bitter. This was fantastic, cant imagine how great it would be fresh from the tap. A+

Special thanks to Beerlando for hooking us all up with a growler. Aroma is strong and sweet. Mostly vanilla and citrus hops. Flavor is lighter, with more bitter hops and vanilla, but also a nice malty finish. Fairly sweet, as well. Very well balanced and very good.

Dark hazy copper with a frothy off white head. The aroma has a bit of the onion that you get in Furious. The citrus and pine are well blended. Flavor has plenty of malt and hops, and the balance is pretty amazing. Full body. Sweetish finish. Thanks to tytoanderso.
