Hazy amber-gold with big, foamy off-white head / Rich, creamy nose of fresh pine, citrus & bread / Medium body, some sweetness with creamy, low carbonation, and with good malt-hop balance (for a 2IPA) and finish / Flavors of bread, oats, fresh cut pine, orange, lemon, and cream / Not as aggressive as some, but beautifully balanced with great flavor profile. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 8, 2009 Picked up growler at the brewery and shared with the beer gang at Cellars Wine & Spirits. Pours a hazy orange amber brew, some syrup character that brings a thick off-white head that has some nice retention and lots of lacing. As soon as the growler cap was removed I would pick up grapefruit scent even before pouring into the glass. Aroma of grapefruit, some mango, tropical fruit and a hint of golden grain malt. Taste is full bodied, a little syrupy, with flavors of grapefruit zest, mango, a touch of banana, and a little pine. Finish is semi-sweet, mildly bitter with a lingering grapefruit and pine aftertaste. Well worth the hour wait in line. scoobydank (6), Maple Grove, Minnesota, USA does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 25, 2009 L: Thin off white head. Vibrant blood orange. Only a touch of brown. A consistent cloudiness.
S:A bright citrus orange. A sweet floral grassyness comes storming out.
T:A sweet candied blood orange pops out. Slight grapefruit citrus roles in. A caramel bready wheat comes floating through. What really stands out is the blood orange.
M: Nice fat smoothness with a sharp fizz on the back of the tongue.
D: Delicious incredibly balanced beer. The hops still really pop out with being so balanced though. This beer lasted much longer in the growler than I had anticipated. Very good. DalzAle (516), Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA

Pour was a rich dirty orange color with medium carbonation. Aroma was very fruity, flavor had lots of orange, grapefruit and of course; HOPS! For being a stronger beer, it hid the alcohol very well. I hope Surly reconsiders making this a one time only offering, as I’m going to be pretty bummed once I run out of Growlers. badgerben (3610), Blaine, Minnesota, USA

Strong tangerine and orange aroma. Some grassy-ness and lemon. Far stronger caramel malt flavor than I was expecting. Not overly bitter tasting at all. Sweet orange peel. Delicious. Sweet pine, honey malts with resinous pine notes on the nose. Pours a rish gold with a thin white head. Sticky pine resin in the flavor, with a good balance of malts, but still hop forward, an awesome ipa. Citrus rind, grapefruity as it warms with lemon peel and hints of grassy hops. A real treat and a pleasure to drink. ogglethorp (890), Ohio, USA

Oh, Surly, Surly, Surly, how my heart beats for you after trying this beer. Pours an opaque super-dark amber with a dense gray head. Huge nose of pine, fresh-cut wood, and some big fruity marijuana. Creamy, thick, sticky body. Nutty, toasty, piney, weedy mid-palate. Long dry finish. Cracing, refreshing, loaded with flavor, and still perfectly harmonious throughout. Lots of DIPAs are just pretending. 16 Grit is the real thing.
