aetheon (55), Beer Dungeon, Minnesota, USA Jan 31, 2009 pours somewhat thick soft dark brown with lots of lacing. very little aroma. Full bodied with flavors of coffee, ash and lightly burnt sharp hops at the end. Some creamyness as well. I dont know what classifies this as a brown ale, it totally tastes more like a porter or dry stout except less on the chocolate notes. Overall its ok, but I wont be buying it again being fairly expensive n all. FlssmrBrewAlum (1079), Lisle, Illinois, USA Jan 24, 2009 12 oz glass on tap at the galway tribes (frankfort, I’ll). Pours an extremely dark brown, slightly hazed, with ruby highlight and brown moderatr head that laces. Aromas are heavy on coffee and brown roasty malts up front, coffee and tobacco mix in. Initial is very chocolatey and tobacco, mixes well with a touch of smokiness, coffee, and overall very welcoming malt profile. Light bitterness, but the malt really steals the show. Flavors are spectacular, balanced, quite yummy. Complex. Another kudos to the fine people at Surly Brewing. Cheers presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jan 23, 2009 Trade with noncaloric. Thick rich head on reddish-brown beer. Rich chocolate cream aroma with a hint of alcohol. Love the big cans but not a big fan of the beer inside this one. Flavour seems a bite winey. Doesn’t come of too well for a Brown or an oatmeal beer for me. nbutler11 (729), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jan 18, 2009 Can from Ed at Heritage. Pours a dark amber color, like a scotch ale, with a fluffy tan head. Smells and tastes of barley, oatmeal, maple, and faint hops. Finishes with black tea and caramel. Lacking balance and an element of sweetness. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 15, 2009 On tap at Maproom. Pours a dark dull brown with thick sudsy beige head. Good amount of green hops in the aroma over some chocolate and sweet molasses. Very hoppy taste, chocolate, fair amount of roast, some caramel, on the dryer side. Thicker than Flossmoor’s Pullman Brown and definitely more hoppy. Hank1980 (734), Athens, Georgia, USA Jan 14, 2009 Can. Pours amber brown with decent beige head, plenty of lacing. Aroma of citrus hops, caramel, chocolate, faint fruit. Taste is similar with lots of hops and smooth malt character. Finish is hoppy bitter. Mouth is a little carbonated, full-bodied, and satisfying. Overall, a solid brew. BVery (446), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA Jan 12, 2009 Updated: Feb 1, 2009TAP: pours reddish/brown with beige head. Nutty and chocolate on the nose, with flavors of chocolate, caramel, nut. Hop finish. Great beer! Beardface (977), Eugene, Oregon, USA Jan 9, 2009 16 oz can brought back by my dear friend Kathy from her trip to the frozen tundra of Minnesota. Nice brown pour with hints of red and a decent fluffy tan head. Big whiff of chocolate and oatmeal with some light hop aroma as well. Nice flavors of caramel, chocolate and oatmeal with a surprisingly large hop bite for the style. Very enjoyble and I cannot wait to break into the Furious she brought me!
