Commercial Description:
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

16 oz can brought back by my dear friend Kathy from her trip to the frozen tundra of Minnesota. Nice brown pour with hints of red and a decent fluffy tan head. Big whiff of chocolate and oatmeal with some light hop aroma as well. Nice flavors of caramel, chocolate and oatmeal with a surprisingly large hop bite for the style. Very enjoyble and I cannot wait to break into the Furious she brought me!

Pours a brownish red with an off white head. Smells like fresh hops chocolates and a little presence of oats. The taste is initially dry, but then a creamy and moist finish lingers. Coffee, chocolate and a hint of oatmeal are strong. I could drink this more often considering we are both from MN.

16 ounce can split by cdumler with Alraomon and myself. Thanks! Pours a clear reddish brown color with a medium head. Average head retention and lacing. Aroma is chocolate, hops and a slight nuttiness. Taste is caramel, chocolate and mild bitter hops in the finish. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied.

Can from Tweety. Pours a pretty brown color with a huge fluffy tan head with great retention and lacing. Nice, clean, pleasant aroma shows fruits and chocolate. Fruits of the plum, raisin and related variety. The chocolate is a nice and pleasant, subtle, cocoa-like. Definitely one of the better brown ales I’ve smelled, and I’m a fan of the style unlike most. Flavor is really nice coco-chocolate, insanely smooth and creamy mouthfeel, absolutely ideal in my humble opinion. Ridiculously drinkable. I am a sucker for beers like this, this is straight up my alley. I am overrating this probably but this beer is just about perfect to me. The best brown ale I’ve ever had.

16 oz. can, courtesy my brother. Nice ruby brown pour with a medium light beige head. Dark caramel aroma, complemented by piney and spicy hops. Smooth mouthfeel,. medium body and carbonation. Dark roasty flavors dominate, but a healthy dose of hop bitterness provides balance. A very good brown ale, distinctive, with bolder flavors than the usual example.

can. Pretty hoppy upfront, piney bitterness, followed by rich and smooth caramel malts. Very thick mouthfeel. There are notes of coffee and hints of roasted malts, but its pretty bitter overall. Very good beer.

Hoppy. Malty. Dark. A brown ale that mixes up genres. Bit of Double IPA. Bit of stout tastes like chocolate and vanilla. One of the best American brown ales I have had.
