BrotherGrendel (545), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 28, 2008 One pint can, contents poured into Sam Adams Specialty glass.
Appearance is a clear, deep brown hue with amber highlights, big thick brown craggy head mostly sustains, thin spotty lacing.
Smell is a nice mix of malts including sweet cocoa, roast, toffee, coffee, and caramel, tones of nuts and surprising amount of grassy hops, slight alcohol, very aromatic.
Taste is amazing and follows the aroma, roast and cocoa malts initially intersperse with grass hops and ride a creamy milk backbone, midway comes tones of strong oatmeal, caramel, and vanilla, finishes dry and bitter.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, creamy smooth texture, mild to moderate carbonation.
This is probably the most flavorful brown ale I have ever had, the oatmeal, cocoa, and hops are all so well-balanced that i wish i had better access to Surly beers, looking forward to more of their beers very soon. moelikebeer (219), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Aug 22, 2008 Can. Medium dark brown pour with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Similar flavor with some toffee and hop bitterness. Somewhat light body with medium carbonation. Interesting brown ale. Very tasty! SilkTork (4151), Rochester, Kent, England Aug 21, 2008 Chris o’s GBBF Shindig 08. Dark red - aroma of damp washing on a warm day. American hops soaked into the malt. Smooth. Difficult to get a grip on what’s going on, but quite nice nonetheless. Bhops (329), Dallas, Texas, USA Aug 21, 2008 can thanks to mar. Magicdave6 (5383), London, Greater London, England Aug 13, 2008 Can in Blackfriers. Aroma is malty, cola and chocolate notes, theres a decent amount of hops, but i dont know what thir doing. Taste is similarly malty, but quite a bit of hop character. Alright, but the ipa blows it out the window. sleestak (180), Williamston, Michigan, USA Aug 12, 2008 Updated: May 23, 2009Poured a brownish brown with a small but inviting cream head. Smelled great - loads of caramel with nicely contrasting floral hops. Probably the most complex brown ale I’ve ever sampled - caramel, hazelnut, small traces of cocoa and coffee are all offset with a surprisingly hoppy finish. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. Yet another Surly product to which I wish I had easier access!
