Subtle notes of vanilla & chocolate. Flavor composition is like the Darkness as well in that each flavor comes at you separately, rather than as one mixed substance; works very well in these instances. Mouthfeel is very smooth with just the right amount of body. Great finish. emacgee (1864), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

Sweet malty aroma, very sweet, caramel, chocolate, twangy, a bit earthy, . The flavor is really smooth and layered. No carbonation. Chocolate, caramel, coffee, earthy, definitely shows the English malt. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 18, 2007 Thin brown head. Deep dark red body with carbonation. Complex tropical fruit hop aroma with smoky chocolatey notes. Dry, yet sweetish, smoky chocolatey malty taste. Dry fruity hop and roasty malt aftertaste lingers for a long time. I had it after the Surly Darkness, so my tasting might be a little off. A very flavorful Brown, more complex flavors than the average brown ale. I enjoyed it a lot. One of the better browns I have had. Hammster (187), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 9, 2007 Can. Pours cranberry and brown with a nice off white head. Aroma is pretty malty and a surprisingly complex mix of coffee, cocoa, and prune. The taste is a little more straight forward. It’s a wonderful bitter maltiness. This beer has a great palate that’s a real mouthful. Where this beer really shines though is in the finish. The taste is initially coffee but then becomes a bitter cocoa like an excellent chocolate bar. Surly makes, without doubt, the best beer to ever come canned.
