aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Nov 25, 2007 The color was medium/dark brown. The head was cream, thin, and off-white. The aroma was coffee, chocolate, caramel malt, and sweet malt. The flavor was sweet malt, vanilla, molasses, coffee, and chocolate. The palate was smooth. The finish was clean. robinvboyer (1419), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Nov 23, 2007 dark brown, nice large beige head. Aroma is sweet and hoppy, with a nice maltiness. Flavour is hoppy, but very subtle, with a nice caramel. Wow, this is a great session beer, crisp, and flavourful, i could drink this all night! larsga (2937), Oslo, Norway Nov 18, 2007 Thin brown head. Deep dark red body with carbonation. Complex tropical fruit hop aroma with smoky chocolatey notes. Dry, yet sweetish, smoky chocolatey malty taste. Dry fruity hop and roasty malt aftertaste lingers for a long time. (0.47l can at Knut Albert’s.) KnutAlbert (3101), Oslo, Norway Nov 18, 2007 Canned. Flowers, pine, chocolate, lots of flavour packed into this. Sweet, but is well balanced - a nice beer. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 15, 2007 Updated: Nov 16, 2007Tap @ Map Room in Chicago. I had it after the Surly Darkness, so my tasting might be a little off. A very flavorful Brown, more complex flavors than the average brown ale. I enjoyed it a lot. One of the better browns I have had. Hammster (187), Eagan, Minnesota, USA Nov 9, 2007 Can. Pours cranberry and brown with a nice off white head. Aroma is pretty malty and a surprisingly complex mix of coffee, cocoa, and prune. The taste is a little more straight forward. It’s a wonderful bitter maltiness. This beer has a great palate that’s a real mouthful. Where this beer really shines though is in the finish. The taste is initially coffee but then becomes a bitter cocoa like an excellent chocolate bar. Surly makes, without doubt, the best beer to ever come canned. jcr (1134), Jasper, Indiana, USA Nov 5, 2007 Above average brown ale mainly because it presents more body and more flavors than most brown ales. The body is a dark brown underneath a small, but fizzy brown head. The aroma is slight, but what is there is malty with roasted grain and a bit of chocolate and very lightly hoppy. The flavor, though, is moderately sweet and lightly bitter and full of malt character raising tastes of caramel, nuts, toast. The finish is citrus hops. Medium body. Lively carbonation. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 5, 2007 9-29-07 can. Roasted alcohol smell. Brown black color. Bitter coffee taste. Decent on the palate.
