Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA Oct 23, 2007 Can- Pours a darker brown cola color. Full of noble hops and grass charachter. Drinking is smooth, nice chocolate malts and oats add to the body. Some slight papery flavors just slightly add. Great finish. Nice beer. Very cool can. SavageElvis (134), Savage, Minnesota, USA Oct 17, 2007 16 oz, can. I would have tried this much sooner, but beer in a can makes me hesitant. I however over came my narrow minded snobby view of beer in a can and gave her a whirl. Bender is dark brown with a red hue, and has a nice caramel-colored head that slowly fades. It has a slightly sweet chocolate/coffee aroma with a little hop in there. The flavor is very well balanced and much more complex than I was expecting. The complement of flavors that danced across my tongue was chocolate roasted malt, caramel, and a little bit of nuts. There is a slight hop in the middle that adds the right amount of bitterness to round out the smooth, long lasting finish of this excellent brew. The body is medium to full and feels creamy and substantial. As I drained the glass Bender left small tracks of lacing, which didn’t last long because I poured another can of Bender into the glass. I really do enjoy brown ales and overall I feel this is one of the best. I feel lucky to have happened across this most remarkable find. Hats off to Surly! FoolishMortal (965), San Diego, California, USA Oct 15, 2007 Can. Deep, nearly opaque orange-brown with a small tan head. Some nutty maltiness and a heavy citric floral hop component in the aroma. Sharp toastiness up front. Chalky chocolate, ruddy hop bitterness, some caramel. Lingering bitterness in the finish, coffee bean and grass. Mouthfeel is light, somewhat dry. miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Oct 13, 2007 Thanks KingpinIPA. Pour is a very deep, dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is of roasted malt and a sweet fruit thing. Flavor is somewhat bitter with a bit of caramel and chocolate. Light body and highly carbonated. Good lacing. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Oct 12, 2007 Poured a dark brown color with red edges. good lacing and okay head. Aroma was of cocoa, and bublegum. Flavor was roasted, chocolate caramel as it warmed good beer. Much more like a porter then a brown ale. aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA Oct 12, 2007 Clean and malt for ward nose witha nice up front bitterness on the palate. Medium roast with a bit of chocolate and caramel. Nice clean and dry finish. Schultsc (478), Henderson, Nevada, USA Oct 7, 2007 Pours a deep brown-black with a creamy, medium-tan head. Aroma contains some fruity hops, roasted grain, and some additional malt fruitiness. Toasted malt flavors with some hops are most prevalent in the full mouthfeel which finishes surprisingly soft--most likely due to the lower alcohol level. Quite an easygoing, enjoyable beer. BückDich (4777), McCall, Idaho, USA Oct 4, 2007 Draft @ Brewery: Dark brown, nice head and lacing. Nose of sweet fruit and cocoa, plenty of chocolate and rich cream, nut bread and dough. The flavor is rich and creamy, lots of chewy malt and chocolate. Nice finish. Good.
