Commercial Description:
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Draft @ Brewery: Dark brown, nice head and lacing. Nose of sweet fruit and cocoa, plenty of chocolate and rich cream, nut bread and dough. The flavor is rich and creamy, lots of chewy malt and chocolate. Nice finish. Good.

Rich dark brown/black pour with a big lasting tan head. Smell is very smooth, and muted but molassessy and hoppy. Some roasty notes in there as well. Nice mouthfeel. Smooth, creamy and perfectly carbonated. Flavor is nice for a brown. Not intensely flavorful, but nice and malty, with some roastiness and oaty creaminess. Good sweet and mollassessy brown ale.

Can courtesy of oakbluff. Pours a very bubbly dark orange-brown with a large mostly-lasting creamy tan head. Semi-sweet aroma of dark malt, nuts, cocoa, oats and very light hops. Flavour of caramel malt, nuts, a bit of chocolate, more hops then the aroma suggests and an average bitter finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Very nice, this went down easily and quickly -- one of the best Brown Ales I’ve ever had.

Brown color with a medium tan head. Aroma is a nice roasty-bready malt mix with some chocolate and molasses detectable. Flavor is a nice darker malt mix that has a good amount of caramel, oat, sugar, molasses, chocolate. Really good for a brown ale.

(can) Pours a dark ruby with a large tan head that slowly dissipates. A very unique aroma of sometimes chocolate, Extra gum, more hops as it warms, and some cocoa. Flavor is great with a lot of caramel, some chocolate, and a nice (but not overpowering) hop finish. The mouthfeel on this beer is superb, as it is incredibly smooth. I think this is my new go-to session beer.

[Can] Pours reddish brown with a huge light tan head. A lot going on in the aroma--malty, fruity, slightly hoppy, hard to place everything. Taste is very nice--light bitterness up front, followed by roasted malt, hints of chocolate. Ultra smooth with a very long finish...dangerously drinkable. I had been really disappointed with SurlyFest, but they hit a homerun with this one!
