| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 21, 2009 Pours a dark reddish-brown with a good-sized head. Complex mix of flavors--coffee, chocolate, nuts, etc. Very smooth-drinking and delicious. Not quite as intensely (or overpoweringly) full of hops as Furious. This is my favorite Surly beer. rabba9 (66), Chaska, Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 15, 2009 Pours dark brown with a nice tan head. Smells of oats and chocolate. Roasted malts gives flavors of chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. I shared this with a relative who commented "I didn’t know dark beer could be this smooth." | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 9, 2009 Can: Thanks ygtbsm94! Pours a deep brown with an amber hue and a dense khaki head. Definitely cocoa notes in the aroma- Belgian malt character of toffee, very light saaz hops, hearty oat notes, sweet nutty suggestions, mild maple- quite complex in the nose. Fluffy body. The flavor has some light raisin upfront and some Belgian malt notes of brown suagr- the oats are hard to detect. There’s some mild toffee as well, coconut notes are there- then comes drier flavors of unsweetened cocoa, nutty British malts and a subtle noble hop bitterness in the finish. A very nice Brown Ale with well integrated flavors and substantial body as well as sessionability. TheRealBastard (141), The-No, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 4, 2009 Eh, poured dark with quarter inch of tan head. Lots of lacing left on pint glass as you drink it. Aroma is malt and peanuts. Taste is sharp and crisp, leaving a dry after taste. Taste characters are sugar, smoke, and dry dark fruit. Not the best. Just decent vitriolix (9), USA does not count | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 28, 2009 Very dark, almost to the point that it should be called a porter. Dark, smokey tones dominate the flavor and aroma. Color is bloody red, almost black. kiefdog (1586), Tampa, Florida, USA
