Commercial Description:
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Can for theisti. Pours a dark red color more than a brown. Lasting tan head. Aromas of English Toffee, cherry juice. chocoalte and roasted malts. Well blended hop flavor with a nice bitter finish. Rich palate make this a robust beer, but I’d drink this at any time. Thanks Tim.

12/13/07: Can courtesy of Vikingbeau. Aroma is better than it appears from my previous rating. Creamy, chocolate hop aroma. Mostly opaque, murky reddish brown body with a thin tan head. Sheet lacing. Quite a bit of flavor for only 5.1% ABV. I’d love to know what the caloric content is. A very enjoyable brew. Bender picks up 3 points from my earlier rating, all from aroma and appearance. Overall score dropped a point. 3/20/06: Not much aroma; a little faint chocolate malt. This is a dark brew (like coffee) with very little head. Very nice flavor; has some hops like a good American brown should. Chalky and chocolatety, perfect balance. Very nice finish; lovely. Ar 6, Ap 3, Fl 7, Pal 5, Ov 17

Can from Footbalm - Thanks! Pours a dark brown with a modest tan head. Light lacing. My first impression is the aroma of wheat bread with some nuts, as well as a little maltiness. Tastes of a brown ale with solid malt, toffee, roasted nuts, and some bittersweet cocoa. Nice creamy feel.

Thanks to fly for beaming this up. Light tan rocky head, soft effervescence, hops detectable in the nose and a big part of the flavor profile though the malts are fine too, toffee and lighter malt flavors, bright an true. Take an English mild, hop it up to an English extreme and dial up the malts heavily without coming in over 5.1% ABV. Wow. Biggish beer in a small package.

Can from Pole Smoke #1 (Sean). Thanks. Another Surly that I have wanted to try for a while, and I have always liked brown ales alot. So I was as anxious to drink this one as the furious. Pours out a dark brown color with a tan head on it. Smell is full of roasted malts and sweet caramel. Taste is smooth and roasted yet somewhat refreshing too. Far too easy to drink, could become dangerous in large quantities. Need to get some more of this. Good stuff for sure.

16 oz. can. Very complex beer out of a Can. Pour is deep brown with tan head. Flavor is oatmeal and malt, and exceptionally smooth. On top of being very smooth, many different flavors are found. Floral, citrus, herbs. Certainly hop in the finish. Very well constructed beer, one of the better I have had in awhile.

Pours a small tan head, good retention and some skinny stringy lace to boot. Clear brown brew with a pretty red hue. Nose is caramelly, lightly nutty and grainy. Medium bodied, pretty damn smooth, lightly creamy. Notes of roast, caramel, cocoa and faint bitter sweet chocolate , maybe some toffee notes as well. Finish is almost dry, roasty and lasting. One nice Brown Ale. footbalm delivered this baby. Thanks Eric!
