I really like the American take on what’s often a rather dull style. Lovely caramel flavours with mocha notes and hints of vanilla. Medium bodied and soft in mouthfeel. As with everything we tried from Surly, this is really nice work. (Can courtesy of Oslo - thanks buddy - at the Milson Point park session September 09) jrob21 (1275), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Now I’m getting some more barley wine like smells like plum. Always sweet. Smooth and crisp. Taste is slightly hoppy and slightly bitter on the backside. Some candied sugar as well. Pours a deep brown color with a faint red hue. Almost opaque until you hold it up to the light. The smells are really entertaining but the flavor leaves a little on the table. All in all a good beer though. aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA

Bit of stout tastes like chocolate and vanilla. One of the best American brown ales I have had. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA

Again, not sure of cans age but I’m not getting the crisp hoppiness others mention. Thus leaving this brew a normal brown and nothing special. durhambeer (1224), Durham, USA

Tan/yellow head that starts big and pillowy but settles down after some decent lacing. Malty caramel, cocoa, roasted barley, cotton candy, and hops on the nose. Similar taste, but with surprising fruitiness as well... apple juice, perhaps? A tad nutty. Quite good. Nice light mouthfeel and low alcohol. That won points in my book. This is not a ’huge’ beer, but its all-around balance and drinkability are top-notch. waolsen (1223), Littleton, Colorado, USA
