Commercial Description:
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

On tap at Jerry’s. Red-brown with good, foamy tan head / Toasty, winey, molasses nose / Medium body, a little thin and fizzy, with balance of malts and hops, and good, creamy hop finish / Flavors of roast malts, oatmeal, sherry, nuts, and cocoa / Very nice - a few tweaks and it’s excellent.

Now this is a first...canned. A nice gift from jarspag. Aroma is a little hard to pick up, but the carbonation lifts a nice bittering hops smell with a nutty malt scent. Mostly toffee and cream in the flavor with a nut-brown background complimented by the obvious oats. Quite carbonated, finishes crisp and hoppy on the palate, very easy to drink. Reminds me of a Newcastle on steroids.

Can from Ed at Heritage. Pours a dark amber color, like a scotch ale, with a fluffy tan head. Smells and tastes of barley, oatmeal, maple, and faint hops. Finishes with black tea and caramel. Lacking balance and an element of sweetness.

A huge and massive THANK YOU for lb4lb and pintsize for just happening to have one and giving it to me, thank you. 16 oz. can poured into my happy stein- poured semi transparent when held to light source, very dark brown with red tint in color, off brown ring around the glass with some lacing for a head. Aroma of nuts (walnuts?), finely roasted malt that was not burned to a crisp, brown sugar, and pure beergoodness that makes you want to swim in it. HIts the mouth with a low-wide body, coffee like taste hits the tongue at first, sweetness the like of brown sugar comes wandering in the middle and lingers, finish is very smooth, solid, and asks nicely to have another sip with a twinkle her eyes. I am a sucker for a great brown ale, and this one did not clear the fence, it cleared the stadium!!! HOME RUN!!!

Can. Pours amber brown with decent beige head, plenty of lacing. Aroma of citrus hops, caramel, chocolate, faint fruit. Taste is similar with lots of hops and smooth malt character. Finish is hoppy bitter. Mouth is a little carbonated, full-bodied, and satisfying. Overall, a solid brew.

Can, with thanks to hellomynameis, pours a coke brown with a nice tan head, good lacing. Malty aroma of light chocolate, nuts and toasted oats. Flavor is more of the same, well balanced and mild with just a touch of sweetness. Palate is a medium mouthfeel, light carbonation, and a bit sticky.
