Commercial Description:
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Very slight chocolate aroma, and pours a dark reddish-brown with a thick slightly off-white head. A nice creamy mouthfeel on it, a touch of sweetness to begin, and then a coffee bitter finish. I just wish I could get this around me.

16 ounce can. Pint glass. Poured dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is of pine hops, malt and cocoa. Taste has notes of coffee, dark chocolate, roast malt and caramel. Initial drinks are sweet with a creamy mouthfeel, but as you go you start to detect some of the hops and even a hint of bitterness on the finish. Very nice. I had one of these a few months back at Old Chicago and they served it way too cold. It was pretty bland that nght, but if you let it warm a bit before opening the can the flavors really come alive.

Poured dark brown with off white head. Aroma of roasted malt. Couldn’t get much out of it. Strong roasted malt flavor with a sweet caramel finish.

A dark brown color with a fizzy thin brown head. The aroma has a lot of sweet brown sugar malt and some mild hop character. The flavor is strong roasted malt with some chocolate and caramel. There is a bit of a hop profile in the finish, but doesn’t leave much on the tongue. Medium bodied beer.

Can’t believe I haven’t rated this yet. Pours a deep ruby brown color, with a lively frothy head. Flavor is light roast, mild coffee, vanilla bean, oats, and cream, with a nice dryness to finish it off. Medium bodied. Smooth and easy drinking on the palate. Solid session beer. Better than most boring brown ales.

Via trade with Cryotek. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Has hints of caramel, some brown sugar, hops, and spices. Finishes with a creamy texture, with a slight bitter.
