Commercial Description:
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Poured a reddish brown color with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, roast, cocoa, nuts, and brown sugar. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, citrus fruits, some pine, light roasted malts, and a bitter hop finish. Thanks Tom!

Can’t believe it’s taken this long to rate this one. Dark brown, slightly red edges with a thin head. Coffee aroma with a bit of a Lysol effect. Sweet oats up front. Definitely some chocolate, nut, caramel and vanilla flavors. Slightly dry finish with a bit of hops. Very rockin.

16 oz. can poured a clear reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of coca, carmel, light vanilla and light coffee. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp with a smooth finish. Flavors of carmel, cocoa, light coffee, light toffee and a hint of vanilla with a smooth lingering cocoa finish.

Can courtesy of oakbluff. Pours a very bubbly dark orange-brown with a large mostly-lasting creamy tan head. Semi-sweet aroma of dark malt, nuts, cocoa, oats and very light hops. Flavour of caramel malt, nuts, a bit of chocolate, more hops then the aroma suggests and an average bitter finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Very nice, this went down easily and quickly -- one of the best Brown Ales I’ve ever had.

Canned. Flowers, pine, chocolate, lots of flavour packed into this. Sweet, but is well balanced - a nice beer.

Thanks to Josh...poured from a can. Pours a translucent ruby brown with an average tan bubbly head. Aroma was nutty, dark fruits, caramel and toffee. Flavor was also nutty with some caramel, toasty and some bitter chocolate. 8-4-7-4-15 Re-rate from another can. I was getting enough different out of this second time around for this beer so I figured I better re-rate. Pours a deep brown with chestnut notes and a smaller bubbly/creamy lighter tan head that left some spotty lacing. Aroma of chocolate, lightly roasted malt, nuts, citrus notes from teh fresh American hops, cocoa and light coffee. Flavor of the same lightly roasty, chocolate, nutty, some coffee and yes...lots of hops!

Can at the 8th Richmond Gathering courtesy of maniac. Pours opaque dark brown. Nose is roasted malt, nuttiness, light spocy hops, earthy hops, cocoa, and coffee. Taste is coffee, hazelnut, roasted malt, cocoa, and chocolate. Body is medium with a creamy carbonation. Ends with more cocoa, roasted malt, chocolate covered nuts and coffee.
