Transparent mahogany with a cream ring for a head. Nose has vanilla, plum, chocolate and light coffee. Flavor is a bit ashy, which creates a singular flavor in chocolate dust, also some minor coffee and nut. Pretty silky body, light bitterness in the finish but no hop balance to enjoy. Drinkable, sweet, and balanced, just lacking some nuance.

Dec 21, 2009 Can courtesy of tytoanderso most likely. Pours a deep clear brown with a medium tan head. Coffee, plum, caramel, and vanilla on the nose. Medium bodied with coffee, malt, and roast flavors balanced with a touch of sweetness. Smooth roast and vanilla and plum finish. Tasty stuff.

Dec 17, 2009 Ruby brown, particulate laden and a creamy brown head and some frothy lacing. Aroma of caramel, vanilla, light coffee, sweet malt, light chocolate and a touch of grains. Creamy body tastes of coffee, mild hops, roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, oatmeal - reminds me a bit of a tootise roll. A little citrus in there too. Perhaps a hair thin and contains a touch of sourness and mild bitterness on the back end. Someone forgot to mention to this beer that it’s a brown ale. Low expectations going in based on style but this was solid.

Dec 13, 2009 Bender is a very, very dark brown beer. The head is a coffee-stain color and bumpy around the edges. It smells like chocolate milk as well as oats, mmm. The taste is really, really good but I can’t liken it to another flavor. The mouthfeel is very smooth. I don’t usually like brown ales but this one is a standout beer. I also really like the 16 ounce cans Surly uses, nice.

Dec 1, 2009 Can from Tim (Hophead22). Aroma of malts, oats, with a subtle hint of sweetness. Dark brown pour with thick bubbly tan head. Roasted dark malts, light hops, cocoa, cream, oats. Smooth medium frothy carb. Very enjoyable.

Nov 26, 2009 16 oz can from Daknole. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aromas of toasted malts and cocoa. Roasted malts, coffee and chcolate flavors with a slightly bitter finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation. A very good brown ale.

Nov 13, 2009 RBSG 07. On tap at Surly. Dark brown/amber, ruby hues. Small tan head. Drinks like a bit fuller english brown without a twang. Toasty, biscuity, fresh oats. Creamy on the palate with a little carbonation bite on the finish. Medium body. Solid brown ale. From notes.

Nov 8, 2009 16oz Can. Dark brownish color with big foamy tan head. Aroma has some hops, nuts and touch of caramel and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, a touch a biter chocolate, and more nuts. Very balanced and even better than the Coffee Bender.
