stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Apr 29, 2009 1 pt can courtesy of tyteranderso. Thanks. Pours an amber color with a big clumpy off-white head that had fair retention and lacing. The aroma is bold with fresh hops, pine and a bot o grapefruit. The taste is nicely bitter caramel with some pine, oranges and sweet biscuit. The finish is long and bitersweet. The palate is smooth and even. Overall: A very tasty brew, love it. Beerman6686 (1266), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 28, 2009 Updated: Jul 2, 2009This one poured a darker amber color with a somewhat small off white head. Aroma was lots of fresh floral and fruity citrus hops, a bit sweet as well. Flavor was a huge burst of citrus flavor, then a nice smooth caramel balance, followed byh a long lasting but not too bitter finish. This is some damn good stuff!!! danielcurtis81 (879), San Diego, California, USA Apr 20, 2009 Can via trade with scoobydank. Nose is sweet hops, soda like nose with the effervescence. Strong pineapple syrup to the nose with caramel-toffee hints. Pours a nice amber hue with a tone of frothy off white to cream head. Flavors have that same pineapple with a strong grapefruit twist. Pretty refreshing. Mouth is pretty sticky with syrup, a mild bitter burn in the after taste. scoobydank (6), Maple Grove, Minnesota, USA does not count Apr 20, 2009 So obviously I have had this beer in all kinds of formats, but I will review the canned version.
L:Thick slightly off white head. Great amber looking color getting closer to red than anything.
S:Big fat stinky pungent grapefruity hop smell. Just a touch of peach. Very faint roasted malt nutty smell.
T:Big grapefruit up front. Also a very roasty bisquity smell. Just a slight light caramel sweetness. All those fiery hops land immediately on the roof of your mouth on first sip.
M:A thick slightly syrupy with a round warmness.
D:Great. Definitely one of those I need a big beer brews. MrBunn (1521), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 17, 2009 Can with thanks to DalzAle. Pours a coppery body with a small/medium head of dense tan foam. Aromas are sharp and cutting pine... smells like the blue spruce we had in the house this past Christmas season. Man is that a great flavor... tastes just like a blue spruce. That said, it does come across as a bit thin at times... don’t know if it is the malt presence being overwhelmed or what. Pretty darn good stuff. Tweety (337), Vancouver, Washington, USA Apr 14, 2009 This one’s intense - maybe too much. The hops are ridiculous, this is probably what it tastes like to chew on a hop flower. lampeno420 (321), Zeeland, Michigan, USA Apr 13, 2009 Damn you surly, why do you put you stuff in a can. I wish i could mistake this for a macro swill and chug it for the price of those. Cracked the can, and an abundance of hops jumped straight out at me. About perfect temp at 56 degrees in my basement. Nice full head with a great aroma. Wonderful balance to it, the malt balances the hops, but they still make their way straight to the forefront of the flavor. I was worried for a second after reading the can it would have to much malt like some IPA’s tend to have. Very drinkable at 6.2%, youll never know it. Since the hops aren’t crazy high, you can drink without taking a breather from an insane amount like Two Hearted (which i love), but makes this a great beer in its own right. Permanent want list. DrHomolka (726), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 11, 2009 Can thanks to mashmaster. Pours a fairly dark copper color, hazy with a nice white head on top. Aroma is pleasant American hops of the citrus variety, Amarillo and/or Centennial perhaps. Some fairly strong malt notes are present in the background. Flavor is mildly malty, not sweet or dry, a little watery. Easy drinking. This beer reminds me of a slightly more citrusy Dale’s Pale Ale. Another good Surly beer but I don’t think this can dethrone Two Hearted from its spot as best Midwest IPA.
