| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 12, 2008 Pours a very dark amber, brown in color with a huge, frothy, off-white head. For an IPA this has a very intense, piney hop flavor! Very nice. Taste is huge hop flavor. There’s no way this is only an IPA. This is better than most DIPA’s that I’ve had. Huge, and creamy on the mouthfeel. I don’t know what else to say, other than this is easily one of the best IPA’s I’ve ever had. I’ve been wanting some Surly beers to see for myself what the hype is about. This one exceeds my expectations. Very well done! thickfreakness (130), AUSTIN, Texas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 9, 2008 Pours hazy, dark amber with a frothy beige head that fades fast. The nose is a nice balance of caramel malt and really piney hops. Taste is tons of piney hops up front balanced by a really nice caramel malt sweetness and a pleasantly bitter finish. Smooth body and light carbonation. Great IPA. Tripplebrew (493), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 8, 2008 Pours a copper amber with creamy head that dissipates to a lacing. Aroma is all about the hops/pine. Aroma is tangy bitter=delicious. Flavor is hops with sweet fruit notes but don’t think it overpowers the bitterness. The bitter pine/hops comes out perfectly. Body is perfect light but creamy. thejoeshow (232), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 7, 2008 16 oz can. Pours a deep amber color with an off white, almost tan head. Excellent lacing and very good head retention. Strong pine nose with a subtle fruitiness in the background. You can almost smell the bitterness you are about to endure! Flavor is nice and fruity-sweet with a bitterness that just wraps around your tongue. Hints of pine sneak in and out with different sips. Very delicious. Body is nice, it isn’t too syrupy that sometimes comes along with beers this hoppy. This is a must have for any hop head. Glouglouburp (2810), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 6, 2008 In short: A well malted, well hopped tasty resinous IPA. Above average.
How: 16 oz can thanks to the simultaneous generosity of mreush and Stine. Thanks guys
The look: Cloudy golden amber body topped by a small off-white head
In long: Nose of pine-tree and some oranges. Well malted body. Fruity rich sweet fruity cake malt profile. A truckload of hops that have both a resinous and a pine-cone juice flavour. Some orange peels too. Enjoyable smooth carbonation, almost cask-like. A tasty and very good IPA but not quite the kick-ass beer I was hoping for. Although I should specify that my can was probably 4 to 5 months old. I need a re-rate on a fresh can. And when I say I need a re-rate on a fresh can I don’t mean a re-rate sitting on a clean toilet. This marks the first time I ever went to a bar because I read on rate beer that a certain beer was on tap. I feel kind of like a beermo. The beer was awesome, though. Nice caramel malt with lots of awesome hops. Dry, bitter finish. Pretty awesome IPA. nimbleprop (844), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 2, 2008 Scored this in a trade with Scubarex. Many thanks! The tall boy pours a translucent, copper, orange amber with a creamy, slightly beige head that laced the glass heavily. Spicy aroma of pine, lemons and grapefruit. Flavor is well rounded with nice doughy, sweet malts and oranges and lemons. Finish is slightly bitter and dry. Very drinkable.
