tedovertu (259), Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA Jun 2, 2008 Updated: Jun 3, 20081 pint can, a soapy heavy hoppiness is the essence of this beer. Major Creamy off-white head that is fully lasting. A crystal clear amber color with no particles. A massive bitterness that starts and ends the same. Extremely long duration in flavor. Medium bodied with soft carbination. A beautiful looking beer that does not taste as good as it looks. To bad I expected more from Surly. Would Not go out of my way for this. I might have a bad batch after reading some of the other reviews. I will try this again in a few months and in a diffent setting to see if my rating changes. weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 1, 2008 From a pint sized can...
Appears a hazy, semi-transparent orange toned amber with moderate CO2 streams that quickly rise to the top. A 2 finger, beige head of cream slowly fades into a mild cap and heavy collar. Tubular lacing is left all around the glass. Very nice.
Smell is of caramel, pine, citrus, grass, and toasted biscuits.
Taste is that of the aromas with a sweet, caramel covered biscuit flavor that has been toasted in a brick oven that’s been fired by cut pine with some tangerine peels thrown into the flame. Along with aforementioned journey through the brick oven, the beer offers some doughy yeast, and a touch of pepper and spice.
Mouthfeel is silky upon the first sip, leading to a nice bite of spice in a medium bodied, sugary, bitter but balanced brew. Naka (524), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 1, 2008 Pours a deep burnt amber color with a thick foamy off-white head that was gone after a few seconds. Grapefruit with a grassy cat pissy note in the back. I love cheesing. A little noticeable alcohol as well. There is an outstanding caramel balance to the hop flavor. The hops are primarily citrus, but there is a noticeable piny resin and a bit of tea floral. A medium body. A very good IPA. MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 1, 2008 My Bottom Line:
The bursting, unfettered hoppy festivities of this India Pale Ale seduce the lupulus lover with minty, resinous, and grassy petals atop a slender caramel malt stem. One cannot help but be hypnotized by this luminosity.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam protects the misty amber copper.
-This could be a little too intense for non-hopheads, but for those looking for a hop fix, this as bright and fresh as it gets.
-This might not be balanced, but who cares.
-The mouthfeel is softly carbonated, and the malt’s just big enough to provide sustenance while never taking drinkability away.
Can. Trev (850), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA May 31, 2008 Updated: Sep 12, 2008Pours a nice hazy amber-copper with a thick off white head.
Aroma is floral hop initially then pine, all backed by a toasty malt.
Flavour carries the pine hop through a medium caramel malt body. Finishes dryish bitter.
Very tasty. Rogueone (506), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA May 27, 2008 Bottle shared by tytoanderso: Pours a dark amber. Aroma of fresh pine, caramel malts, resin. Bitter finish that is rounded out with a sweeter-than-expected malt backbone. Definitely would love to have a 6er hanging around! rayg1 (433), Ft. Mill, South Carolina, USA May 27, 2008 Pours out a deep orange red with a huge orange head on it. Aroma is awesome with piney hops rushing in your face, evergreen, and a slight caramel sweetness for balance. Taste is thick with hops, resiny, piney, and dank. The whole beer has an overall bitterness that just smacks you in the mouth and leaves you with a peppery and earthy aftertaste once the hops onslaught is over with. Once again, caramel and toffee notes are here to provide a touch of sweetness and save the day with some balance. Really good stuff, the best beer I’ve ever had out of a can. Good job Surly. radiomgb (1921), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada May 25, 2008 Very deep copper in colour, medium sized off-white coloured head, excellent lacing. The aroma is incredibly hoppy, some spice, pine, spruce, caramel sweetness. The flavour is again quite hoppy, some pepper, pine and some citrus, moderate sweetness. Moderately bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes very long, bitter, some spice.
A fantastic IPA, very drinkable. I really liked the pine that came out of this. Very well balanced.
