scattershot (10), Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2009 This one is a keeper, nice and hoppy, clean finish and excellent overall drinkability. alagnak (296), Littleton, Colorado, USA Aug 31, 2009 16oz can from theisti. Nose is huge caramel and huge hops playing nicely. Touch of tropical fruit there, too. Flavor is more of both, really well-balanced, a touch of sweetness and white pepper on the finish. Really solid. Thanks Tim (and to Ken for muling from MN) mkade8883 (52), Goleta, California, USA Aug 29, 2009 Updated: Sep 24, 2009Source: Extra in trade with Garry
Aroma: Very reminiscent of Arrogant Bastard, lots of hops and even more caramel. Yum.
Appearance: Dark amber/copper with three fingers of off-white head.
Flavor: I get mostly caramel with a hop bitterness to match. Signifcant sweetness on the finish. Re: Had a newer can, nicely balanced now with extra bitterness.
Palate: Medium carbonation.
Overall: Nice beer, though to me it seems more like an American Strong Ale than an IPA. Pretty darn tasty. larryLSB (140), La Selva Beach, California, USA Aug 27, 2009 Poured from 16 oz can. Dark amber with reddish hue, minimal white head. Huge nose of hops which masks everything else. The taste was not up to the promise of the aroma, a bit of the sweet malt, that was it. Not on par with the west coast ones. kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA Aug 26, 2009 Tap at Highway Mike’s: Pours a deep amber/copper color with a large beige head and light lacing. Aroma is medium sweet, very floral with citrus, grapefruit and caramel. Flavor is grapefruit, floral, orange, some caramel and a bit resiny. Very nice hop bite. Medium bodied, creamy texture. Finshes as hoppy as it starts, great American IPA. AtomicYeti (3), Minnesota, USA does not count Aug 25, 2009 Almost a blend of an amber and an IPA, this one has a nice aroma and flavor. The malt profile has a nice bite to it (probably because of the Scottish Malts), even outside the hop profile. boamr (112), Pennsylvania, USA Aug 25, 2009 Can thanks to mashmaster. Pours a amber color with a nice white head to it. Great smell of pears and some citrus. Has a great taste of fruit and hops but not to bitter on the finish. Goes to show good beer can come from a can SamGamgee (1396), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA Aug 23, 2009 Pint Can thanks to photomike. Another great beer from surly. Dark red amber in color with a creamy head. Really nice hop nose with lots of tangerine and flowers and a spicy edge. Nice darker toasted, dry malt profile with lots of citrus and pine flavor but with a relatively soft bitterness up front. As the beer goes down, there is a firmer resiny, grapefruit peel lingering bitter flavor. Pretty light in body and very drinkable.
