Commercial Description:
Like Hops? You'll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it's about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

16oz can. I am not a big hops guy or a big IPA fan, but I still really enjoyed this beer. Pours a very thick, cloudy red/orange with a creamy off-white head that will not die. The aroma is thick with citrus and hops. Flavor is a mix of a peppery grapefruit hops and malt. I think there is an almost perfect malt/hop balance. That ballance is why I like this beer even though it is not my "style" Another good beer from Surly that is very drinkable and nice.

Eagan, Mn. - Old Chicago Pizza - on tap. Dark copper pour, nice sticky, slightly off-white head that leave generous lacing. Fresh spruce aroma with some minty accents. full bodied flavor with plenty of bitter grapefruit, some nectarines and a bit of chocolate-toffee maltiness to balance it out. Nice, sticky mouthfeel. Excellent way to start off my vacation.

16 oz. can thanks to tennisjoel. Dark orange pour with a creamy off-white head. Strong piney, grassy, and citrus hop aroma. Bitter hop flavor of mild grapefruit and pine with just a slight toffee sweetness to balance. Not sticky at all but just perfect for an IPA. This is one the better IPAs I’ve had.

Bottle thanks to CanIHave4Beers... Andy is the best! Pours bright orange with one-finger beige head. Spicy but not too resiny citric hops on the nose. Nice tropical fruit aromas as well. Great malt sweetness that doesn’t get sticky or compete with the hops. Nice bitter finish. Light, slick palate but nicely carbonated. Crisp, refreshing, and easy to drink. Great.

Bonus beer shared by Melissa at the Sam Adams Beer Lover’s choice tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 7/30/09. Cloudy amber pour with a medium beige head. Citrusy and piney hop nose balanced by lots of bready malt. Citrusy and spicy hop flavor with a some malty sweetness before the bitter finish.

A very good IPA. I’m very curious about the oaked version, but after a couple cans on this one, I’m not quite convinced that it’s as magnificent as I was led to believe. That said, it’s still a very good IPA. And there’s something commendable about crafting a good IPA below 6.5% abv.

Sample at the Sam Adams beer tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 07/30/09. The beer pours a hazy orange color with a medium thin light tan head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing. The aroma is mostly grapefruit with touches of pine and malt. Medium body with a lively mouthfeel and strong citrusy hops character. Notes of pine and sweet malt as well. The finish is hoppy with a lingering bitterness. Not as complex as some IIPAs but I can respect the straightforward hoppyness.
