Pours an orangey brown with a huge sticky cream colored head. Unbelievably thick and sticky lace. The aroma is caramelized fruit, pine, well buttered toast. Superbly balanced flavors of toasted malts and piney hops. Perfect mouthfeel. Just big enough to not be watery, yet thin enough to be easy to drink. Really a fantastic beer. I must say that this brew pretty much lives up to its rep (as is true for all Surly beers I’ve now tried). A lustrous copper pour with a nice silky head, and very good retention (in a can!). A bit aroma of citrus and pine, but extremely well balanced with the malts, giving the beer a pleasant heft. I would drink this by the case if it were readily available here! sneagrams3 (1756), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Skunky hoppy aromas with a note of blueberries. Total piney nose. Grassy and citrus. As weird as it sounds, it reminds me of the mosquito fogger that would drive through my neighborhood as a child. Hmm... Medium bodied and big. Great medium roasted malts. Toasty. Great hop palate. Spicy and piney. Grapefruity. The description on the can is spot on. Totally bitter hops but the sticky caramel malts hold on for the ride. Totally hop driven and blended. Rolling hop palate. This one sticks with you. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 22, 2006 Draught at Bryant Lake Bowl. Nice, sweet hoppy aroma. Inviting and promising. Rich, murky reddish dark amber with a small, off-white head. Excellent lace. Piney, hoppy and somewhat creamy with some sourness and somewhat acidic. Quite strong. Palate is a little rough. Mellows a bit by mid-glass. A great start for a new brewery. Very solid. Nice job. jake65 (1722), Williston, North Dakota, USA

Thick lacing. Nose is intense with citrus, pine, and caramel. Flavor is full of hops, citrus and piney. The maltiness is subtle, this is lives up to the hop loaded hype. I really enjoyed this brew! ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA

Pours out a dark red color with a nice thick off white head on it. Smell is full of hops, pine, grapefruit.. Damn. It smells like a double IPA. Taste is very thick and chewy (that is for you, Seant), with no alcohol detected. This beer is so thick, I struggled to get the can down. Ridiculous how thick this beer was considering it isnt a double IPA. This isnt a bad thing though, as it is a very good beer. Thanks Professor Sean, I owe you a hot lunch. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 6, 2009 Can thanks to unclemike. Dark orange-brown with a thick finger of light tan head with great cathedral glass effect lacing. Citrus and pine hop aroma, thick malt in the nostrils, caramel and toffees. Taste is lots of malt, more toffee and butterscotch with a smaller than expected piney resin hop finish.
