Commercial Description:
Like Hops? You'll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it's about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Have sampled many places from Minn. to Il. and now have gotten around to finally rating what, I believe, was first commercially described as a strong pale ale. On tap at Lunar Brewing Co. A deep amber/orange color, with a medium, off white, reducing head,& clingy lace. Aroma is tangerine, pineapple,& tads of other citrus. Resin, more citrus, malty sweetness, & a strong but pleasant hop dryness continue in the flavor to the end and beyond. One of my hop favorites since it’s inception. Has stayed very consistent since my first sampling in Minnesota.

16 oz. can. Nice deep golden apperance...nose is mostly piney hops and caramel. This thing has got the perfect balance goin on. Superb flavor and mixture of hops/malts - with a nice soft carbonation. Perfect for sipping or a pounding session. This thing is exploding with flavor for being 6%. Wish I could try this off tap - which I hear is a lot better. Nice one!

1 pint can, Fargo, ND, USA. Hazy amber, thick frothy head. Intense citrus aroma, floral, woody. Smooth, not overly carbonated, medium body with a nice bitterness on the side of the tongue at the finish.

GABF 2007. After being disappointed by the Darkness and then tasting this, I became very skeptical of Surly. The hops profile reminds me of DFH 90 minute in the smell, but with more grapefruit over the dirt and earth. Thinish body. Not at all expansive or bright with the flavors, this degenerates mostly into unbalanced bitterness. In my notes, I wrote, "I have a feeling Surly is everything that’s wrong with over the top." In the burgeoning craft beer world, where brash in-your-face brands like Three Floyds and Stone are doing so well, there is the danger that new market entrants will confuse style with substance. My limited experience of Surly so far has me thinking that they are going over the top for all the wrong reasons.

Can: Courtesy of pepsican...thanks Andy. Pour is a translucent copper with small tan head with decent retention and lacing noted. Aroma hits immediately with massive doses of pine, citrus and floral hops...their is enough of a malt backbone to keep this from being too one-dimensional. Medium bodied mouth feel, slightly creamy. Very nice indeed, flavors are massive Simcoe hops and pale malts along with a bit of citrus. I must say I’m impressed with my first Surly brew.

Can: Amber/copper in color with a soapy off-white head. The nose shows lots of citric (especially grapefruit) hops with just a touch of balancing sweet toffee/caramel toward the back. In the mouth it is well-balanced and shows tons of dry and bitter piney/herbal hops vs. the mainly citric hops the nose showed. This one gets bonus points for packing in so many hops at a "lower" alcohol.

Pours a golden amber with a nice small head. Nose is smooth with caramel and grapefruit and citrus hops. Taste is clean, sweet with caramel and toffee, plenty of c-hops, able to combat with the big sweet body quite well.
