incutrav (487), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA May 11, 2006 Updated: Jun 4, 2007Holy hopness! Ya, like everyone says, its a hoppy mess, but tasty once you get past the puckering you do after a sip. Enjoyed more then a few 4oz. shots of this at Arborfest, where Furious won best brew, which i voted for by the way. Nice color, great taste, not for everyone for sure, but thats why its called furious and not Miller. One of my top five brews of all time.
UPDATE! Just bought this last week at the liquor store! It is of course now in cans, glorious CANS! It was just as great out of a can, they want you to pour it into a glass, which i did for the first few, but then i got lazy and just shot gunned them strait from the aluminum, and was not disappointed! ALSO i have upped my rating to the PERFECT 5...i have tried a ton of IPA’s in the last couple months, and none of them are as great as ol Surly Mrthirstyneck (339), Minnesota, USA Nov 1, 2006 my my my....a top 5 beer i say myself. A hoppy route to be sure. pours a great burnt orange. nice head a flavor explosion in my mouth bitter to no end but finishes tasty. a weaker man might be put down by this brew but not this guy. huge fan. now in cans of four packs this beer loses nothing in a can and fillsa pint glass to the brim. Go and get this beer puts most hoppy beers ive had to shame. drpimento (457), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Mar 18, 2007 from a sample kindly provided to us at Bodega: Divine! Surly Furious
16 oz can
Moderate pour in a shaker
Recent brewing, enjoyed 07/07.
Poured a copper brown with a large rocky fully lasting head.
Smelt of strong pine, resin, spruce and the whole forest of strong hops, pineapple cake, grapefruit, some toasted grain.
Taste was upfront strong bitter piney hops with a moderate sweet toasty malt backbone followed by a harsh bitter resin hops and more of the hops backbone on a lingering resin hops finish.
Palate was medium bodied, oily, lively carbonated, and strongly astringent.
Overall, this is just awesome. Hops galore with a nice malt backbone. Perfect balance. Perfect everything really. Should almost be perfect, but I let my Steel Reserve drinking friend have a sip and he recoiled in disgust. "Too bitter, man! ", he said. So thanks to ballplayin’ Jordan and his Steelies it doesn’t get a perfect score. I suppose it’s a little harsh if you’re not used to it. True, it’s really harsh and bitter for an IPA. Maybe over the top for some people, but for an experienced hophead this is a nice little treasure. LtJudge (352), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Jun 29, 2007 Thanks to Brewblackhole for this one! Pours a dark amber color with a off white head that lasts a long time. Huge hop/ malt aroma is the first thing I noticed! Wonderful caramel malts and citrus hop bombard your tongue. A wonderful bitter finish.Man, I cant believe this is from a can! Awesome!
