Commercial Description:
Like Hops? You'll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it's about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

A: Bold red/amber colored body with a fluffy 1/2 off-white head. The body is crystal clear and looks great when held to the light. This is one of those beers that wears f*ck-me pants. S: Hops, hops, hops, and malt. The hops have a bunch of pine and citrus and there is some caramel malt also. T: The flavor is thick with hops. It is good and bitter with mostly pine and grass. There is no citrus flavor. The malt just barely pokes it head through yet it is still balanced. M: This beer is pretty thick for it’s color. The hops really weight this down. D: The bitterness on this is great for 16oz, but it might be a bit much for a couple of them.

Pours a translucent amber, with a good sized off-white head. The aroma is an explosion of grapefruit and other citrusy hop aromas, with a hint of smoke. The palate is an explosion of bitterness, that is nicely balanced with a citrus and a hint of sweetness that is anything but malty. This is a hop lovers dream, and if you like your hops this is worth the trade. This beer has a permanent spot in my fridge (thanks Omar for canning) until the darkness hits a can.(wink wink)

Pours a very dark amber, brown in color with a huge, frothy, off-white head. For an IPA this has a very intense, piney hop flavor! Very nice. Taste is huge hop flavor. There’s no way this is only an IPA. This is better than most DIPA’s that I’ve had. Huge, and creamy on the mouthfeel. I don’t know what else to say, other than this is easily one of the best IPA’s I’ve ever had. I’ve been wanting some Surly beers to see for myself what the hype is about. This one exceeds my expectations. Very well done!

I crack open the can and take a quick smell.......whoa! A strong smell of pineapple and piney hops. Pours a dark amber color with a thin foamy head which made me check whether this was really an IPA. Lots of sticky lacing. Upon first tasting it is rather smooth and citrusy (orange/pineapple). It then finishes with a piney bitterness with some roasted malts in the background. Has a nutty touch to it. A great IPA.

Thanks to RagallachMC for the can. Clear orange with a large head. Good retention. Fair lacing. Heavy aroma of fresh citrus and pine hops. Taste adds the caramel sweetness which was covered in the aroma. Also tastes some burnt malt. Ends with a big, bitter bite. All so very fresh. I really gotta hand it to the canned angle.

Fresh from the brewery via growler in less than three hours. Normally I don’t care for very hoppy IPA’s, but wow! This one is hoppier than a dozen kangaroos in the middle of the hottest iron frying pan. Fresh out of the growler, it screams “pine” with a little citrus. A very thick copper and tan head. The bubbles in the head needs a pin to break them. The flavor is most excellent with hops as the dominate feature. There is some nice sweetness and bitterness, but an excellent IPA to help you forget how bad your favorite football team has performed last season, and realize that not everything in the world is all that bad afterall. Again, most Excellent. Use a tulip glass to get the best aroma and flavor. Food pairing? Not needed! Furious is meal all by itself. PROSIT!

Pours a dark blood red with an impressive tan head that sticks around for a while. Aroma is big hops with an emphasis on the pine and citrus. Taste is sweet carmel malts up front with earthy and citrus hops behind it to clean off the palate. Very nice taste. A bitter aftertaste lingers and gets a little on the nasty side which hurts the mouthfeel. My first drink of this I was thinking 5. After finishing the can, it’s not quite there, but it’s damn good.

Surly. Furious. Now I can be glad to live in Minnesota. The local beer scene was fairly dismal till these folks came along. Sure Summit has some decent offerings and Minneapolis town Hall is superb, but for such a rich brewing heritage the offerings had been lacking. Grabbed a Furious at Grumpy’s after the game to celebrate the a Twins victory. It was hoppy. It was good.
