Hazy copper with a lasting quarter inch of foam. Aroma is delicious blend of earthy caramel, tea leaf and orange-chocolate. Front flavor is similar with a finish of dirty grapefruit, nut shells and resiny oak. Nice frosting of lace is left behind. The medium-heavy body is smoothly carbonated, hop-tingly and dry. Definitely one of my top two IPAs. mnstorm99 (26), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

I am partial to my local brews and this is the best local there is. The Surly brewing company is still pretty new but they know what they are doing. Beautiful Hop flavor and aroma, with a touch of citrus. Very pleasing to the eyes, with a good head. Whoever said it tastes like Two Hearted (great beer), not even close in my eyes, Taste’s are very different. hellbilly (1566), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA

fresh and straight from the can... incredibly slick full mouth feel. thick like drinking cream...9/5/9/5/19/4.7 WickerBrew (312), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Very very hoppy, and I was surprised to see the ABV was so low. Had a bit of thickness that carried a good head. Alpha King should be sweating, if this was more available in chicago it may become my favorite out there. wildfan (7), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA does not count | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Oct 21, 2007 Excellent beer. | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Nov 20, 2006 Lovely deep copper with a massive, pillowy white head. Nice lacing, head sticks around well, attractive stuff. Nose redolent with citric hops, quite tart and bitter, good undertone of sweetness. VERY hoppy stuff, big kick of hops, full of grapefruit and some pine, well-balanced with light caramel sweetness. Great palate, fat and rich, a mite syrupy but not cloying, just a hugely enjoyable feeling in the mouth. The best beer I’ve had out of a can, and hooray for Surly for putting this one out. One sip, and I can’t imagine life before this beer...it’s as if the hop-gods have at last deemed us worthy.
Hazy red-orange amber, thin lingering white head. Spicy, fruity, herbal, and citrusy hop aroma. Flavor is very hoppy, backed with a slight malty sweetness. Relatively substantial body, with a crisp finish.
This beer was clearly a labor of love...it would have been easy to just hop it all to hell and call it a day. It’s definitely hopped to hell, don’t get me wrong, but careful attention has been paid to the malts as well. This artistry has yielded a beer that is both well-rounded and over-the-top.
A truly solid first offering from my new favorite brewery.
