Commercial Description:
Like Hops? You'll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it's about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Can Amber colour with a nice head. Lovely aroma of grapefruit, citrus and very floral endeed. Very hoppy and very bitter endeed. Incrediable that they can put so much hops in that can.

I love Furious. Such great flavors of hops. Fruity and citrus with hints of pine. Nice and chewy, great body and is so smooth. Balanced and very drinkable.

Really enjoyable. Pour quite a dark amber color, almost brown. Head is creamy and light tan in color. Malty, caramel, toffee, lots of piney hops, bitter, citrus, and very well balanced. Slightly earthy and a nice creamy mouthfeel. Very good.

Poured a dark amber. Aroma was malty, but very nicely hopped up in citrus and pine. Taste followed suit. Appearance of head is just awesome- rocky and creamy. Very quality brew in execution, finish is malty and somewhat juicy hop with a slight note of alcohol. Very solid.

Can from brewfiend, poured a deep amber to orange color, nice head, good lacing, true to style in appearance. Aroma was strong piney and citrus hops. Flavor is well suppported by a heavy malt profile, somewhat approaching an amber-red style IPA, strong caramel and orangey flavors, followed by a most assertive pine and citrus hop profile, finishing with even some floral notes. Bitterness lingers, one well-hopped IPA, fruity esters dangle around, playing games alongside the bitter hop finish. Mouthfeel is full bodied. A much enjoyed IPA alongside my favorite Stone IPA, but it didn’t beat out my favorite! Thanks for another nice one, Brad! Re-rate, 9/07: Again, a super nice IPA, very nicely done. Original rating stands.

[Can 4/26/09] Pours copper reddish/orange with a fine head. The scotch malt is easily identified in the aroma and flavor. Piney and pretty bitter, dry. Sticky body, with soda like carbonation. Reminds me of Moylan’s Hopsickle. 7.4.8.4.16 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [rerate can, thanks to WisconsinBeer!] Pours a darker copper/red, clear, with a very sticky foamy off-white head. Aroma is brightly hoppy, very piney, resinous, honey malt sweetness, loads of green pine needles. Flavor follows, super piney, sweet cotton candy, great aggressive hop kick, quite bitter but also very sweet so the high IBU’s are fairly balanced, seemingly like a double IPA. Medium bodied, sugary watery feeling with sharp carbonation. 8.4.8.4.16

1 pint can. Props to my brother-in-law for bringing this to me from Minneapolis. Aroma: Bursting with grapefruit, pine, and floral hops. Medium sweet maltiness is more than just backbone. Appearance: Deep red in color and slightly hazed. Light beige head was full and creamy with great retention. Great lacing. Flavor: Lots of hop flavor, again with grapefruit, pine, and floral notes. Some mown grass in there, too. Medium sweet maltiness with a biscuity note in the background. Bitterenss was stronger than expected and lingered for a long time. A slight tea flavor in the finish. Palate: Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Overall: If the flavor matched the aroma, I’d rate this higher. Great fresh hop aroma. Flavor was a little week and overshadowed by the bitterness. A great beer, nevertheless and worth a try.

On a recent trip to the twin cities, this was recommended at the local beer store when we asked for something good and something local. He didn’t know much about it, but said he’s had nothing but compliments. Reading the can, it was obvious that it was an IPA, so we gave it a shot. The can thing is a little strange - but not a bad way for a small brewery to save some money - it’s not like people are cellaring this stuff - it’s meant to be consumed on the spot. Anyway. I was blown away. Much better than expected. A rich hoppiness, that I didn’t really get at first. After reading the commercial description it makes sense - the malt makes a difference. It adds a complexity that is generally lacking from IPAs, which, can tend to the unbalanced. The result is a surprisingly balanced American IPA. Good job guys - and let me know if you start exporting this stuff across the river to Wisconsin.
