Pours out a beautiful copper color with a big white head. Big hoppy, pine, grapefruit aroma. Taste is a hoppy explosion with hints of grapefruit. There is a hint of malt that smooths this out really nice. Finishes nice and dry, an absolute classic. scoobydank (6), Maple Grove, Minnesota, USA does not count | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 20, 2009 So obviously I have had this beer in all kinds of formats, but I will review the canned version.
L:Thick slightly off white head. Great amber looking color getting closer to red than anything.
S:Big fat stinky pungent grapefruity hop smell. Just a touch of peach. Very faint roasted malt nutty smell.
T:Big grapefruit up front. Also a very roasty bisquity smell. Just a slight light caramel sweetness. All those fiery hops land immediately on the roof of your mouth on first sip.
M:A thick slightly syrupy with a round warmness.
D:Great. Definitely one of those I need a big beer brews. gunhaver (1033), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 4, 2008 Can, courtesy Guerde. Perfect pour: dark brownish red, big carbonated sparkling white head, and tons of dry, cotton-like lacing on the glass. Aroma is malty, but coated with citrus. Semi-sweet chocolate notes, too. Pine is masked by an overall balance. Hops hit the tongue first, and the malty body takes over soon after. A harmony of pine, citrus, mango, caramel, and vanilla. Medium-bodied. Sticky and refreshing. Easy to drink and extremely balanced. lampeno420 (321), Zeeland, Michigan, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Apr 13, 2009 Damn you surly, why do you put you stuff in a can. I wish i could mistake this for a macro swill and chug it for the price of those. Cracked the can, and an abundance of hops jumped straight out at me. About perfect temp at 56 degrees in my basement. Nice full head with a great aroma. Wonderful balance to it, the malt balances the hops, but they still make their way straight to the forefront of the flavor. I was worried for a second after reading the can it would have to much malt like some IPA’s tend to have. Very drinkable at 6.2%, youll never know it. Since the hops aren’t crazy high, you can drink without taking a breather from an insane amount like Two Hearted (which i love), but makes this a great beer in its own right. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jan 26, 2008 Poured into a nonic. Very dark for an IPA, I’m expecting it to be malty. Head is tan and an inch tall. Lots of sticky lacing.
Aroma is a blast of resiny, oily hops. Mainly pine, but some floralness too. I get a little sweet breadiness in the background as well.
A blend of sweet caramel malt and pine-filled hops washes over the tongue, leaving behind a pointed hop bitterness that isn’t at all unpleasant. Less malty than the color would indicate, but still a nice balance here.
Medium body, sticky and resiny from the hops, but the bitter finish is enticing. EHopper (348), Minnesota, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 30, 2008 Being a hop lover, this beer starts with an advantage. That said, this is special. The aroma is so enticing, like skiing through the pines on a warm spring day when the sap has just begun to run, but with a hint of a tropical island fruit. The flavor starts there and then smoothly moves to an explosive, pleasant bitter flavor that lingers just the perfect amount of time. From beginning to end, and even to the next, the anticipation and enjoyment remains. tdaglow (41), Minnesota, USA

I’ve actually noticed a considerable increase in hoppieness with about my last months perchases in the can. I didn’t notice it so much as when I’d had it on tap last week at the Muddy Pig. brosen561 (21), Minnesota, USA

Pours very dark golden-brown with a thick, dark beige head. Wonderful aroma of citrus, coriander, and pine/grass. Very strong flavors of grapefruit, lemongrass, pine, and plenty of hops, with notes of caramel. Nice, full bodied beer. Finishes with a strong bitterness and leaves a little residual in your mouth. Just awesome.
