Commercial Description:
Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

Can… Clear yellow lager with a small, wispy, white head. Good retention. Lots of white and black pepper in the nose, but I’m also picking up a little jalapeno, habanero and pale grain. Light to medium-bodied with fizzy carbonation. Honey, toffee, pepper and a light slap-on-the-cheek of acetaldehyde. Like the can, I guess this beer’s a little green. Finishes bittersweet and then dries out. Thanks to Skyview for the bottle!

Can courtesy of tytoanderso, Pours a gold/copper with a thin off white head. Smells of toasted malt, caramel, some earthy hints, some subtle spicy hints. Tastes of dry malt, a touch of grass, spicy, some fruity hints, earthy. Well rounded and an excellent autumn beer. I wish I could get this one locally.

Can shared by shigadeyo. Poured clear golden color with an average frothy white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate dough yeast and pils malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth dry texture and soft carbonation. Medium doughy sweet flavor with a medium bitterswwet finish of moderate duration. Good above average beer.

Can from allendodd. Special thanks because this is: My first Surly. Pilsner glass. Pours gold with a three finger white head. Mild noble hop aroma. Near medium body with brisk carbonation. Flavor is spicey/floral/grassy with some pale malt. It drinks incredibly well. Finishes with a mild fruit note. And perhaps a bit bready.

First beer sampled at GTMW ’08 and served on draught. Pours a semi-clear golden blonde brew with an average white head that quickly dissipates to a thin white ring. Aroma of multi-golden grain malts, some flowery hops, and a touch of herbal spice. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of mostly golden grain malt and a touch of white pepper and yeast. Finish has a malty golden grain aftertaste with a mild bitterness that quickly disappears. Not your typical Surly in-yer-face hop infused character, but an enjoyable lightly spiced Munich Helles style beer.

On tap at GTMW. Poured slightly hazy paler golden with a short, sticky cap of white head. The aroma picked up fresh lemon rind and crisp bready notes upfront with drier floral behind.. well-presented and enticing. The flavor had a dry bready core with fresh floral and spicy yeast layered throughout.. lemony notes showed on the back. Drier and yeasty on the palate with a refreshing finish.. crisp and well-balanced.. this would be an awesome lawnmower beer!
