Commercial Description:
Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

Pours a clear golden yellowish orange color with pale golden banana yellow when held to a light source and a one finger frothy soapy white head. Very good retention, only slowly fading into a thin cap and lasting ring that leaves rings of soapy lacing in it’s path. Sweet pilsner malt aroma with nice bready yeast notes, light fruit, toasty biscuit malt and subtle hops. The pilsner malt provide a slight golden apple presence as well as a very nice toasty biscuity nose. Lots of crisp light flavor but not watered down at all. Refreshing slightly creamy medium body with a nice amount of bready yeast and crisp light fruit. I’m picking up a lot of apple, first in the aroma and now in the flavor. There is a lot of sweet pilsner malt that is countered by a slight zest spiciness and an amazing crisp floral hop presence as well as a pleasant toasted biscuit malt character. This is an insanely drinkable, very flavorful session beer that I wish that I had constant access to.

Can pour is light yellow with an extremely long lasting white head. Aroma is of malt and earthy hops. Taste is sweet almost bread like with a nice earthy/floral hop finish. Mouthfeel is a light bodied but highly carbonated lager. One of the better lagers I’ve tried, I enjoy the presence of hops in this easy drinking beer. Keep it up Surly!

Poured from can into Frankfurter glass. Bright, clear gold with billowing foamy head. Certainly doesn’t look unfiltered. Somehow smells both sweet and dry at the same time. Light semi-sweet fruits (apple, pear) and doughy bread. Despite these notes, it leaves my nose feeling dried out. Certainly tastes unfiltered. Packs more of a malt punch than expected for such a low abv pale lager. Nice rounded flavors consisting of apple, pear, hay and bread dough. Slight noble hops detected at the end. Pretty high carbonation, smooth clean body that is light but heavier and softer than a Pils. Dry finish. Endless drinkability. Just fantastic!

Can courtesy of tytoanderso, Pours a gold/copper with a thin off white head. Smells of toasted malt, caramel, some earthy hints, some subtle spicy hints. Tastes of dry malt, a touch of grass, spicy, some fruity hints, earthy. Well rounded and an excellent autumn beer. I wish I could get this one locally.

This is a delicious beer. Rich bread and grassy hop aroma. Flavor is perfectly balanced, light yet with depth and layers. Superb.

Thanks for making this possible Ty. 16oz can looks like a sports drink. It has a clear golden color with a small head. Aroma is very herbal and spicy hops. It kicks the nose a little without being American aggressive, in-your-face-hops. Otherwise, it is a clear white bread maltiness underneath. Flavor more awesomely crisp and white bread malts. has a good lightly bittered hop finish. It is good, herbal, fresh hops finish yet a thicker malty lagered flavor. Despite being unfiltered it has a completely clear pour all the way through. Its a very nice brew.

Can, thanks Santa! Clear golden yellow body, white head with nice lacing. Nose is lemony & grassy hops, some sweet toasty malt, a bit floral with maybe a hint of honey. Nothing really stands out in the flavor, rather a whole bunch of different things mingle together perfectly - bready malt, grassy & floral hops (like a springtime field, seriously.), bitterness increases towards the finish but so does the malt leading to a great, slightly tingly finish that goes on and on. More American breweries need to make beers like this. I would drink this all the time if it was available around here.
