Commercial Description:
Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

"Surly Hell is brewed in the style of a German Light Lager or Munich Helles. Pale Yellow in color, this unfiltered lager or "kellerbier" is brewed with Pilsen and Carahell malt, Opal hops and a German yeast strain. Delicate malt flavor finishing with a tart crispness. 15 IBU. Hazy straw yellow, big, lovely white head... Beautiful aromatics, floral, herbal,.....a trifle grainy...but altogether pleasing. to drink: bing: there’s the smooth. Bang: there’s the malt, and Boom:...there’s no Boom...just the smooth and the malt, and some light hops, plus the deliciousness of the yeast. Disclosure: To those who don’t know already, I’m not a lager lover. Just not enough flavor. I’m partial to unfiltered brews, as well. Like Belgian ales, some German ales, certain Americans...like Surly...wait, Surly made a German lager...and it’s unfiltered? Sign me up...wait, I’m already drinking it...oh, okay... I do like kellerbiers, when I find them. Can’t think of one I haven’t liked. Kep that yeast in, please! More flavor, por favor! And here I am drinking Hell (a name I wish they’d saved for an abbey ale, or something, but I’m not charge, am I?)...and I am enjoying it. If this had zero yeast in it, I probably would report the doldrums by now, but there’s just enough going on in the mouth to keep my tastebuds happy. Drining this sample from a tall Schneider Edel-Weisse glass. Seemed appropriate. clean, yet fully flavored. You can hand this to a lager-lover and win them over, I think. Hey, it worked with me!

Pours golden with white head, aroma is bready and lemony. Taste up front is a bit of lemon and hay like malt that leads into the smooth bready malt of the lager yeast with a bit of sweetness at the end. While not a pilsner fan, these guys made a good pilsner.

Can, thanks Santa! Clear golden yellow body, white head with nice lacing. Nose is lemony & grassy hops, some sweet toasty malt, a bit floral with maybe a hint of honey. Nothing really stands out in the flavor, rather a whole bunch of different things mingle together perfectly - bready malt, grassy & floral hops (like a springtime field, seriously.), bitterness increases towards the finish but so does the malt leading to a great, slightly tingly finish that goes on and on. More American breweries need to make beers like this. I would drink this all the time if it was available around here.

Sweet lightly toasted aroma. Bright gold, sticky head, great lacing. Nice and crisp, little grassy and somewhat metallic. I could drink this beer all night, quite the statement from me.

11/04/2009: Surly Hell... Aroma: Lightly fruity (pear) and lighty yeasty/mustiness. Appearance: Looks like a typical macro lager - pale straw color; transparent; white head; finely detailed lacing. Flavor: Toasted malts; wheat bread crust; delicate yeastiness; mild bitterness with a nice spicy/grassy noble hop bite; crisp finish. Palate: Medium-light; good mouthfeel; fairly smooth. Overall: Really nicely done Helles bier; very sessionable.

1 pint can from Skyview via trade. Thanks Bob! Rating #103 for this beer.

On tap at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle,IL. and dispensed to a BL shaker with a light golden hue, a modest, white, bubbly head and etched-like, clingy lacing on the glass. The nose was distinctive Pils malt, with light grain, and a hint of lemon grass. The flavor added light hop spice, mellow bitterness and a pleasant dryness. Crisp, clean, and very sessionable.

On tap at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL. This one poured with a lighter standard white pour, light-medium body, and golden orange color. Overall, a very nice balanced and solid crisp feel to this beer. Everything went down quite pleasantly, and it made for a darn good experience because of its drinkability and subtle uniqueness. It had an interesting combination of notes on both aroma and flavor of bread, amber grains, zesty citrus, and pilsner grass. A very nice lighter beer.

Brewed in the USA... Courtesy of Dan from B.A. thanks again !!! Pours a pale golden color with a thin white head and some mild carbonation. Aroma of grains, malts and yeast. Taste of citrus, grains, bread, malts and spicy notes. Mouthfeel is medium in body with a crisp malty backbone that finishes sweet and dry. Overall, extremely drinkable !! Even German mothers enjoy this one. LOL.
