Pours an average cheddar amber with a malty and floral biscuit aroma. Hints of nutty grapefruit and carrot juice are floatin’ around in there as well. Flavor is a malty, earthy vegetable medely with a floral butter finish. Average mouthfeel, but a bit spikey at times. A decent pale ale for sure, but it seems better suited for a backyard bbq. rcasta (489), El Salvador

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 23, 2008 Bottle pours a clear amber orange color with a thin beige head. Hardly any lacing along the side of the glass. Aroma is citrus hops with a fair amount of caramel malts. Flavor is nicely balanced between the malt and hops, but both were fairly subdued. Slight bitterness in the finish. Overall a decent beer, but when I had this on tap I enjoyed it more. Darkover (1316), Columbus, Ohio, USA

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 5, 2008 I had the Sweetwater 420 on draft at the Toscan Blu bar in the Waverly Hotel in Atlanta, GA.
My Sweetwater 420 came to me in a foaming chilled (ugh) pilsner glass with a very nice 2 finger head of foam. Her body was a clear golden-amber hue with a tinge of orange in the light. The nose revealed hints of grapefruit and lemon hops with soft bready malt in the background. As the head recedes, it leaves a decent trail of brussels lace that persists in their need to stick to my glass. A nice treat much to my surprise since she came to me in a chilled glass. A crisp light body that disappoints compared to the rather full nose. A mix of grass, pine, and lemon in the clean palate and a lightly bitter finish, though I really had to work to get even those hop notes from my Sweetwater 420. More malt profile as I work my way through my brew. Fresh bread, hints of caramel and light toasted malt notes whisper by like a faint breeze in a moments passing.
Overall a much lighter body and mouthfeel, but it is an Extra Pale Al so that would fit the beer style. The start was clean, the quaff was clean, and the finish was clean. Personally, it was too clean. Not enough hop or malt flavors from the start to the finish. Even the nose was mild compared to a regular Pale Ale and a few other Extra Pale Ales I have enjoyed. Overall, Sweetwater 420 was OK, but nothing I could get excited about. ksurkin (408), Norfolk, Virginia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 3, 2008 pours a clear, golden color with a 1/2in head that levels off shortly after the pour. aroma is sweet, with some citrus, orange/lemon, and a touch of hops. not the strongest aroma, however. flavor is well balanced with hoppy overtones and some caramel malt in the background. some hints of what, and quite refreshing. palate is smooth, easy to drink. a good front porch kind of beer, but no "wow" factor.
