Commercial Description:
Sweetwater Blue is a unique lighter style ale enhanced with a hint of fresh blueberry. When you drink this beer take a good whiff first and you’ll smell the blueberry influence, but on the taste it’s extremely subtle and the finish is extra clean. Ain’t no fruit beer, but it is our breakfast beer, usually folks that are looking to quench their thirst or for those that are new to the “good beer” lifestyle; this is their choice. This brew and the ESB were the original two to go through the tanks at SweetWater in February 1997.

Medals: Bronze medal winner at the 1998 World Beer Cup, Fruit Beer category; Always the funky favorite at any outdoor beer festival

Malt: 2 Row, Wheat

Hops: Centenial

12oz bottle. hazy dust gold in color, with a small retentive head. the attraction here is the aroma of fresh blueberries. unfortunately, that’s all i could really pull out of the aroma, aside from sugar syrup. though not complex, it is refreshing. the taste is that of taking a newly picked blueberry, sprinkling some grain sugar on it, dipping it in mild hops, and popping it in your mouth. the finish is rather astringent berry and spice with a hint of silk and oddly enough, licorice (rather potent, actually).

It’s quite nice for a fruit beer. Compared with, say, the Blackbeary Wheat by Long Trail, this is heads and shoulders above. Nice sweetness and good bit of blueberry without being overpowering.

Bottle. I actually really enjoyed this beer. The color was a nice pilsner color, aroma was full of blueberry (pretty nice), head was small. The overall taste was nice, great for a hot day in the south. Overall, I enjoyed this brew (suprisingly). Thinking about getting this one in a keg for the spring time.

This beer was ok, but I really don’t like sweetwater. Actually, the blueberry flavor compliments the naturally sweet taste of sweetwater, so it wasnt bad considering, but fruit beers really arent my thing either, so I gave this one a pretty low score. Smelled nice fragrant, and it tatsted sweet, but more of a womans beer if you ask me.

Not bad. Poured pilsner gold, small white head that dissipated pretty quickly. Blueberries, wheat, and blueberries all around. Eh.

The color was a crisp golden color. The head was fizzy and white. The blueberry was very pungent. There was also a sweet smell. The flavor was fruity (blueberry), little sour, peppery. The blueberry flavor tasted more chemical and peppery than actual fruit. The finish was carbonated.

For a fruit beer, this is not a bad entry. It smells amazing, unfortunately, better than it tastes.

Bottle. Well, I can’t say I was expecting much at all from this brew, so I was slightly pleasantly surprised. The pour is lifeless and light with no head and minimal carbonation. It’s completely see-through, especially around the narrower portion of the flute. The nose is crisp, clean, and has an appropriate level of blueberries. Pretty much the same thing in the way of taste: clean, no off flavors, just some pleasing blueberry hints. The mouthfeel is way too watery. It’s interesting to see that Centenial hops were used in this, maybe one hop in the entire kettle. So, what we have here is a very light blueberry drink. It precariously walks the line of alchopop, but it isn’t fizzy or artificial enough to make my blood pressure rise with fury. However, you sure as hell won’t catch me drinking this again, even if it might cool me down on a hot December day in TN.
