Commercial Description:
It's nice to be able to finally brew some beer without restrictions on it. we came from Colorado where we could brew or try anything. We've been waiting 7 years to make a stout and we harnessed all that frustration into this batch of beer.

We didn't get caught up in the parameters of a specific style we just brewed a big fat hoppy beautiful beer. The timing of the law change couldn't have been better for us, because it has taken until this summer for us to get set up in our new brewery. We finally have some capacity to experiment with some new style. This could lead into a seasonal offering from us in the future. For now we're just glad we can satisfy the demands of the folks who have been on us since day 1 to make a stout.

Malt: 70/80 crystal malt, chocolate malt, black malt, roasted malt

Hops: Centennial, Willamette and cascade - on the dry hop!

Bottle from trade with jimbowood. The pour is black as it should be. The head is only wisps of dark tan cream. Aroma is smooth roast and coffee. Flavor is balanced hops and roasted malt. No alcohol presence at all. A very pleasant and easy drinking imperial.

Bottle from Springslicker. Pours black with plummy brown head. Aroma of mild coffee, chocolate, and hops. Medium mouthfeel, perhaps a tad thin for the style. Flavor of coffee, chocolate, and some moderate dark roast. Finish is very hoppy, along with some dryness, ash, and some sourness. The bitterness lingers, and like Shigadeyo said, this is sort of like an IPA- Stout marriage, and a rocky one at that. One the plus side, this has very well hidden alcohol.

NorCal tasting Apr 07 - First time with Sweetwater and it was a decent beer to have. Pours out a thick, black liquid with ruby highlights and a thick brown head. Aroma reminded me of meat marinade, but getting past that there’s some smoke, roasted malts, coffee with a subtle fruity hop kick. Mouthfeel was on the thin side of things but still not bad. Flavor was more of the same with the nose, with a sorty of juicy hop profile that I found interesting. Nicely balanced, easy drinking.

Thanks to Goldtwins for sending me this bottle. Nicely hopped chocolate scent comes from the black body with a decent tan head. Medium palate for an impy. Tangy/slightly bitter chocolate flavors with a good dose of hops. A stronger more full chocolate flavor comes in the middle and this beer finishes nice and clean.

Bottle thanks to Dickinsonbeer for sharing. Dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, dark chocolate and piney hops. The flavor of the roasted malt was rather mild, with more of the chocolate coming through and the resinous hoppy notes. Good beer, but I really don’t like hopped up impy stouts.

12 oz bottle from Jimbowood: Im torn on this one. The aroma and flavor are nice, but it’s so aggressively hopped, that it almost tastes sour. Super hoppy imperial stouts don’t really work for me. The hops kind of outshine the malts here, which seems kind of silly for an imperial stout. But, this is still a pretty good beer. I like the overall flavors - lots of coffee and some interesting roasty malt flavor, but the hops are too aggressive and the mouth feel is a little watery. Still nice, though.

12oz bottle acquired in a few trades. This one labeled best before 06/12/07. Poured a dark black color with a larger sized brown head. Aromas of chocolate, pine, roast, tobacco, and some coffee. Tastes of chocolate, roast, caramel, and very light coffee. Body could be fuller. Lacing left on the glass. Alcohol content well hidden.
