Jeppe (2638), Ølbutikken, Denmark Aug 16, 2005 Hazy dark amber colored with a frothy off-white head. Dominating yeast and spice aroma, herby and chocolaty tones. Extremely herby flavor, typical for ’t IJ, probably from the yeast. Notes of malt, toffee and spices. Foamy soft mouthfeel. hotstuff (3175), Indiana, USA Aug 11, 2005 Bottle. Ivory large sized head that was mostly lasting, fine-small sized bubbles, good amount of lacing, carbonated, cloudy, and a reddish brown hue. Nose was malty, caramel and sweet and mimicked in the flavor. Very tasty and quaffable. Smooth palate. Medium body. Truly enjoyed this brew and definitely would like to have this one again. Try it if you have the chance. Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Aug 8, 2005 (Bottle 33 cl) Dark brown and cloudy with a neat, light brown head. Very aromatic and sweetish with weak notes of burned malt. Some notes of chocolate. A delicious and very typical Abbey Dubbel. 240504 Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands Jul 31, 2005 yet another good ij brew! underrated imo. lovely fruity, yeasty nose. taste: sweet, bitter, roasted malt, licorice, fruity(citrussy, plums, figs and more). full body with soft CO2. long bitterish fruity finish. well balanced, alc. is well hidden. one year old aged example. very nice! kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia Jul 26, 2005 Bottle: Lovely ruby dark amber colour, with a lasting beige head. Fruity aroma, with some plum and citrus notes. Spice there too. Flavour starts a little sweet, but remains quite dry all the way through. Mildly spicy notes evident, along with some caramel and dark fruit notes. Alcohol well disguised. Not bad. TBone (6675), Pori, Finland Jul 25, 2005 Bottled (BB 07/2006)
Dark nut brown, good creamy off-white head. Aroma is lemony, a bit fruity. Medium-bodied. Some roasted malts underlying. Not sweet, but a bit sticky mouthfeel. Dark dubbel, but not really dark in the taste. Easty to drink, does not show alcohol much. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 6, 2005 Updated: Jul 7, 2005Small, frothy, dust-colored head with thick, heavy lace and a hazy, red-mahogany body. Spicy, yeasty bouquet with a prominent note of mustard seed, black pepper, milk chocolate, toffee, and paint thinner. Flavor is milky, malty, and very spicy with medium sweetness and moderate bitterness in the finish. Foamy, heavily carbonated mouthfeel. Different, but not really in a good or bad way. The bottom-line is that this is not a beer that I’d buy again.
Hunsell (400), Amsterdam, Netherlands Jun 28, 2005 Dark brown with a nice creamy beige head that stays forever. Nutty aroma. Taste is matly with nuts, caramel. Pretty standard dubbel, lacks a bit of character, especially for anIJ-brew. Certainly not as bad as suggested by some, but also not the best ’t IJ has to offer.
