Aroma is a bit dusty, of oak, malt, alcohol and has a hint of varnish in it. Taste is a lot better, quite sweet, some hoppy bitterness with a decent bitter finish. Well balanced. Palate is great, very smooth beer, gulps down as if meant to go that way. Medium carbonation. Was a bit skeptical after the sharp aroma, but really quite like it now. ukoolaid (572), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA

Very aromatic and sweetish with weak notes of burned malt. Some notes of chocolate. A delicious and very typical Abbey Dubbel. 240504 SoLan (1427), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 16, 2007 Brilliant amber/brown. Large, dense, chunky, tan cap leaves a coat of lace. Nose of sweet malt, musty doughy yeast, fresh vegetation (not quite herbal), and light perfume. Flavor adds some caramel cookie malt, subtle funk to the yeast, dry and yeasty finish, and aftertaste of toasted cookies and sweet herbs. Medium body, soft and foamy, too much carbonation. Nice session dubbel with a t IJ twist. Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 15, 2007 I was impressed with this Dutch version of a Belgian Dark Strong. It’s a little darker and not quite as strong, but the strong raisin and burned sugar aromas come up from the tan head and warm the nostrils. Oxidization is evident right up front. Every beer I have had from ’t IJ has been oxidized, so it has to be planned. epassa (105), Sao Paulo, Brazil
