Nose of sweet malt, musty doughy yeast, fresh vegetation (not quite herbal), and light perfume. Flavor adds some caramel cookie malt, subtle funk to the yeast, dry and yeasty finish, and aftertaste of toasted cookies and sweet herbs. Medium body, soft and foamy, too much carbonation. Nice session dubbel with a t IJ twist. Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 15, 2007 I was impressed with this Dutch version of a Belgian Dark Strong. It’s a little darker and not quite as strong, but the strong raisin and burned sugar aromas come up from the tan head and warm the nostrils. Oxidization is evident right up front. Every beer I have had from ’t IJ has been oxidized, so it has to be planned. epassa (105), Sao Paulo, Brazil

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 27, 2002 I don’t know what the weird label signifies - an ostrich with egg, standing in a desert with a windmill in the background. Mine was nearly a year past its 12/01 best by date though it was in my fridge awhile. Subdued aroma of raisins, malt, vanilla and chocolate. Cloudy brown color with no significant head involved. Some minty hops, also. I did taste an iron mineral element, as others have previously noted. Flavor is also a bit subdued with more raisins and chocolate, and a nice crisp, dry finish. Sweet and sour aspects add complexity. This is a good beer but just seems a bit weak or diluted. Compare to Belgian dubbels, brown ales or British old ales. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada

Flavour is red plums, almonds and caramel. Very well balanced, complex, nicely bitter. Fine example! Thanks again mds. Sigmund (2300), Hafrsfjord, Norway
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 6, 2007 Updated: Mar 15, 2007330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. The beer is quite clear reddish brown when poured, a slight haziness may occur if the sediment is disturbed in the end, decent head. LOVELY aroma with intense fruity and vinous notes, spices are very much present too. The flavour is also fruity and spicy but not very powerful, hints of caramel. Moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness. A slightly salty finish. Light bodied, the ABV is well hidden. Easy drinking. The aftertaste is not remarkable.
